Kalelarga, the street older than the city, with all due right earned the mythical epithet. To this day it follows the print of the main longitudinal roman street (Decumanus Maximus), this is the main city street that even then flowed through the spine of the peninsula. It existed, therefore, before the city. The strict roman urbanization simply proved its natural placement, and future urban time periods did not change anything in that respect.

Erected in 1543, the Zadar Land Gate is an ambitious work of the head engineer of the Republic of Venice Michele Sanmicheli. It was immediately assessed as luxurious, and later as the worthiest monument that Venice left in Dalmatia. Moreover, with the Golden gate of the Diocletian’s palace in Split, it is certainly the most beautiful city gate overall on the historic Dalmatian ground, masterpiece of its author. It seemed rather impressive while it was reached by a drawbridge.

Did you know, that founded in 1829 by Austrian commander Baron Franz Ludwig von Welden - a passionate botanist and admirer of Dalmatian flora, Queen Jelena Madije Park is the first public park in Croatia (the park was opened on the 16th of September, 1829). To create a garden on top of a heavily fortified military object was an unusual move, but one Zadar is eternally grateful for.
