There was a time when work was done for the simple satisfaction of doing it well.

At Casa Matiki, we still believe in that.
Growing a garden, caring for the animals, repairing an old stone wall, preparing a house for someone who is coming to stay.
Small things, repeated every day.
Not because they have to be perfect, but because they deserve to be done with care.

And after all that, we like to remember one more thing Charles Péguy wrote:
“Celui qui travaille bien dort bien.”

Casa Matiki has its roots in an old Istrian stancija dating back to 1835, set in the countryside and restored with respect for the region’s traditional architecture.

It was here, in 1994, that Sonja brought Casa Matiki to life, gradually transforming the old rural estate into a place of hospitality while preserving its original character.

Among the buildings on the estate is the Lavanda Garden Cottage, separate from the main house and surrounded by greenery, with its own private garden, courtyard and pergola.

In these first days of autumn, everything is still wonderfully green. Just a few leaves are beginning to change colour, the days are growing gentler, and Casa Matiki is slowly settling into a different rhythm.

Casa Matiki is not a resort, and Sonja never wanted it to become one. It is a true Istrian country home, shaped and transformed over time by the people who live here and those who come to spend a few days with us.

We really needed a little rain. 🌧️

The earth needed it, and so did the garden. A little time to slow down, breathe, and let nature do its work.

Now the air feels fresher, the colours brighter, and everything seems ready to begin again.

And now… we’re ready to go. 🌿☀️

At Casa Matiki, even the rain is part of summer.
