What to Bring & What to Expect on your Stay at Kay Refij
Greetings to you! Our team at Kay Refij Bed/Breakfast & Mission Center are so excited to serve you on your upcoming mission trip. We want to make sure your trip is as restful & enjoyable as possible; so we’ve prepared a list of things to expect & optional items to bring (highlighted in YELLOW to make your trip exceptional. Our facility is beautiful, clean, & safe. Nonetheless, it is still in Haiti.
What to Expect:
• Clean drinking water: We have filtered Culligan water available for you 24/7. Please bring a water bottle, as there is no trash system in Haiti and we will not provide plastic water bottles. They are not a sustainable solution.
• Non-Hot showers: This is a blessing! Hot water is tough to manufacture. Our water is also limited. When you are not using water in the shower to either get wet or rinse off, please turn it off….then turn it back on when you need it. Or you can do the “true Haitian experience” & take a “bucket shower”. Fill the bucket & use what’s in it.
• Amazing food: Our food is both Haitian & American-friendly. We can accommodate food allergies. Our kitchen is clean. We also have snacks/cookies/bottled soda (Coke in a bottle!!) available for purchase beyond breakfast, lunch, & dinner.
• Power: No irons, blow dryers without generator power: these items kill our inverter/battery power system. We have 0% electricity provided from the government, so we use solar panels/inverter/batteries/generator for our power. We will run the generator in the AM & PM before bed.
• Air Conditioning: We have A/C in the rooms, but prefer to not run them all at the same time. If possible, we will conserve power by not using A/C 24/7. Your comfort is our highest importance, though. Hence, we will do our best to accommodate your needs. We just ask you understand & respect our power infrastructure here at Kay Refij.
• Bunk Beds: Several of our rooms have bunk beds in them. They are very comfortable.
• Swimming: We are 60 feet away from the Caribbean and a great safe place to swim. Bring your suit, mask, & water shoes.
• Music/Worship: Instruments are welcome! We have guitars & a keyboard for use.
• Exploring the Area: The people in our community are great! God is doing awesome things here. It is safe, but we ask that you ask if you’d like to go explore. If you feel led to give something to someone, it is very important to ask Brian or Heather before doing so. We usually know the background, & don’t want to create a dependency/unhealthy expectation of relational boundaries.
• Clean Facilities, Beds, etc: Our team is amazing & we work hard to make this place very clean. We do ask that you bring a towel & a sheet with you. We have new pillows, but you are welcome to bring your own.
• Toilets: We have indoor plumbing! But we need you to put your paper/wipes in a covered wastebasket. Our septic system/toilets cannot take all the paper. We remove the trash daily. It’s not as bad as it seems!
Insects: We spray for bugs in our home regularly. There are very few. But….you will see some mosquitos, flies, a few spiders, geckos (they’re good!), etc.
What to Bring:
• Toiletries: Soap, shampoo, baby wipes, toothpaste, Hand sanitizer, etc.
• Linens: Towel, Sheet (for bed), Pillow (optional)
• Fan: We HIGHLY recommend a personal battery operated fan. We have the Ryobi Lithium ion battery operated fan, bought at Home Depot; here’s the link (http://www.homedepot.com/p/Ryobi-18-Volt-ONE-Dual-Power-Portable-Fan-Tool-Only-P3320/205022215). Yes, it’s $39.95. But it’s a GREAT spend! They last ALL DAY; they keep the mosquitos away, provide noise, and ample air all night. We have 3 of them & don’t know what we’d do without them.
• WATER BOTTLE: We provide Culligan water at all times.
• Insect Spray: It just helps.
• Sunscreen: Great for field missions & to go swimming
• Water Shoes: Our beach has small rocks to walk over before you get to the water & soft sand. We recommend water shoes.
• Money: If you’d like snacks, art, trinkets, etc. we have them available to support our local community businesses
If you have any further questions, comments, suggestions, recommendations, etc. please don’t hesitate to contact your Missions Team Director. They are free to contact us at: [email protected] or by cell phone at +509-3853-5200. The Lord richly bless you & keep you!
