We had Italian guests for the first time. Enjel and his friends are out of the common guests, they were 20-25 years old and this was pretty surprizing. They have eaten and drunk everything we have served on the table, which is quite unusual, but boys in this age really eat and drink everything they get (I have experience regarding my son😅). The main topic of discusson was communism, however they have not lived in this period, but maybe heard about it from parents. Anyway, the vibe was perfect, as you can see on the picture!

Next week, Hungarian children will head back to school.

For us at Hungry for Hungary, the beginning of the school year is also a good reminder of one of the topics that often comes up during our dinners: education in Hungary.

Our guests are usually curious about what it is like to go to school in Hungary. Is public education free? What does a typical Hungarian school day look like? When do children start learning foreign languages? And how is the Hungarian education system different from the one in their home country?

These questions can lead to surprisingly interesting conversations.

We talk about Hungarian schools, the education system in Hungary, public and private schools, school subjects and foreign language education. We also compare everyday school life in Hungary with the experiences of our guests from the United States, the UK, Australia, Canada and other countries.

Education is much more than schools and lessons, of course. It tells us a great deal about a country’s culture, history and society. Talking about school often takes us into conversations about childhood, family life, opportunities, university, languages and even the differences between generations.

That is exactly what we enjoy at Hungry for Hungary: not simply serving Hungarian food, but creating a relaxed conversation about Hungary and Hungarian life.

During our private Budapest food experience, education is one of many subjects our guests can choose to discuss over a four-course Hungarian dinner. And because everyone brings their own experiences, no two conversations are ever the same.

Today, August 20, is one of the most important national holidays in Hungary. It is the Day of the Foundation of the Hungarian State, celebrating King Stephen I, the founder of the Hungarian state.🎉
But August 20 is also a celebration of something very close to Hungarian hearts: food.
One of the traditions of August 20 is the celebration and blessing of the New Bread . 🥖The bread is traditionally made from the newly harvested wheat of the year, symbolizing the harvest, abundance and hope for the year ahead.
For visitors discovering Hungarian culture and Hungarian food, this is a beautiful example of how closely food is connected to Hungarian history and traditions.
And there is another delicious August 20 tradition: every year, Hungary chooses its National Cake of Hungary.🍰
In 2026, the competition was held for the twentieth time. The winning cake is called Bíborfehér. This year’s competition focused on two classic Hungarian ingredients: a traditional Hungarian curd cheese, and sour cream.
Hungary also chooses a Sugar-Free Cake of Hungary every year. In 2026, the winner is Szilvafácska. The cake combines plum with walnuts, milk chocolate, cinnamon and green tea.
Both cakes can be tasted around Hungary from August 20, making this national holiday a particularly good time for food lovers to discover modern Hungarian pastry.

Hungarian food is part of Hungarian culture

Sometimes the topics we discuss around our dinner table are not really about Hungary at all.

This summer, one of the most important conversations in Hungary is about something that affects all of us: drought, extreme heat, climate change and water scarcity.🪾🌞💦

The Danube River, which is such an important part of life in Budapest, has reached exceptionally low water levels. The consequences go far beyond beautiful views along the river. Hungary's Paks Nuclear Power Plant, which produced around 45% of the country's electricity in 2025, depends on the Danube for cooling.

So suddenly, something that might seem like a local Hungarian story becomes a much bigger question:

What happens when climate change begins to affect the infrastructure we depend on every day?

This is exactly the kind of current topic we love discussing with our guests.

Our Budapest home restaurant experience is not a formal tour or a history lecture. During our four-course dinner, we talk about the subjects that our guests are genuinely curious about — including contemporary Hungary, everyday life, Hungarian culture, history and the issues shaping our lives today.👩‍💼

And sometimes the conversation starts with the Danube and ends up somewhere much further away.

I have found an interesting article about the history of our housing estate. 😍Most of the information were known by me, but there was an interesting one I was wondered: the house we run our home restaurant was the building where the very first inhabitant mooved in!🔑 What a story! 😁Last year it has been coated with isolation and new facade, so it looks nice, isn't it?

Since we have started our love project, this was the very first occasion that our nice guests asked us to participate in a commone grace before dinner. And it was really heartwarming as they said thanks for their new Hungarian friends (us), the nice hospitality and the new, delicious dishes they could taste. We told them about the religious history of Hungary which has been rolled back during communism. I for instance was baptised in secret by my grandma's request, as both my parents worked for the state or local municipality and they couldn't efford to baptise their children. And we still feel the aftereffect of this Era.. 🍲🍷🇭🇺

Our guests spend more than three hours with us, while we discuss several topics. Current political situation comes up almost every time, they are interesting in Hungarian special political situation and want to inform direcly from locals. We often talk about the US and European issues, as well, and we really enjoy changing different point of views. And now, after a few hours of Hungarian elections I have got two nice messages from US which shows these discussions leave deep impressions in our guests. Well, the show must go on, and we hope, on a more democratic way. 🍲🍷🇭🇺

Close to this Christmas we had a nice couple in from Texas: Renée and Steven. They are the perfect open minded guests who would really get to know the visited country, people, their way of life or culture. This evening we also discussed about the humor of different nations. And if we understand each other's humor. I told them about the popularity of local stand up comedy, and tried to translate some punch lines of our best humorist. And it worked! We also got some links from Steven, from his favourite film "I love Lucy". That's how we spread the Hungarian culture, and come to know the foreign culture which makes us richer and more open! 🍲🍷🇭🇺

We push the boundaries.. We've got a chance from our US friend, travel agent, Angela to host a pretty big company with 18 people. Well, this was quite a challenge, as our small apartement in the town would be too small for this dinner. So we decided to invite these nice people to our real home in the suburbe. This was the biggest company we hosted ever in , but I think we nailed it!😍 Hereby I would like to say thank you for their school staff donations which we have brought to a small village in Borsod county to the local school. I really appreciate this initiation: while travelling all over the world, this nice company brings donations to the locals with the help of a local foundation or NGO. Well, in Hungary we were the "NGO" who made the Santa day of a poor village's school children happy. Angela, thanks again for this fantastic action, don't stop!🥰 🍲🍷🇭🇺

Another nice family from Texas and North Carolina, US at . We hosted the Szoka family having Hungarian roots: the granddad of Janos left Hungary as a young man at the end of XIXth century and founded a family in the US. He taught the Hungarian language to his son, but it didn't herited to the grandson, Janos. Therefore her daughter, Morgan surprised me, who decided to discover her Hungarian identity and started learning Hungarian. She has been learning it for nine month, and despite the extreme difficulty she understand pretty much and knows a lot of words. I really appreciate her persistence, as the ancestors' national identity can not herite more that 2 generations. Moreover Janos made me happy as tasting my meat soup and , as it remembered him the grandma's savours. 😍🍲🍷🇭🇺
