Happy Nyepi Day, The Day of Silence
Nyepi is the most important Balinese Hindu celebration, which marks the turn of the New Year in the Caka Calendar. Not like the celebration of usual New Year’s Eve which is full of party and fest, this event is celebrated in total silent and peace.
This year will be celebrated tomorrow on Sunday, 14th March 2021. This particular Balinese celebration is so unique that it is the only one of its kind in the entire world.
The name Nyepi comes from the root word “sepi” meaning quiet or silent. The main purpose of Nyepi Day is to pray for the purification of humanity, earth, and the universe.
As preparation to the build-up to Nyepi Day, are a series of rituals conducted in literally every part of the island. The First is Melasti , usually three or four days before Nyepi. The Melasti ceremony is always held on a beach and entire villages make a pilgrimage to their closest beach to perform a purification ritual.
One day before Nyepi, there is a Pengerupukan ceremony which is done to repel the evil spirit or so called Bhuta Kala from everybody’s environment. Before evening, Balinese will do Pecaruan ceremony which is aimed for the evil spirits so that they do not disturb the universe’s balance.
The third are the Nyepi Rituals.

This day is strictly reserved for self-reflection anything that might interfere with that purpose is strictly prohibited.
The Balinese Hindus follow a ritual called the Catur Brata Penyepian, those are : amati geni (no fire), amati lelungan (no travel), amati karya (no activity), and amati lelanguan (no entertainment).
The next day after Nyepi is called Ngembak Geni. On this Day, the Balinese will visit their family, neighbours and friends to express their gratitude and hopes for a bright new year ahead.🙏🙏
