Penjor: The Meaning Behind Bali's Decorative Bamboo Poles - NOW! Bali
In times of ceremony in Bali you will see many penjor bamboo poles lining the street. They might be beuatiful decoration, but what are they for?
An absolute gem in East Bali is Taman Ujung Water Palace 🌴🌴 Constructed by the late King of Karangasem, I Gusti Bagus Djelantik, it was built to welcome and serve visiting dignitaries and kings from neighbouring countries, besides for the pleasure of the king and his royal family. Loosely translated to “the garden on the far end”, the ground features manicured gardens, giant fish ponds and pavillions of Dutch-Balinese architectural blends. Whilst no longer in use by the royal family, the site conserves the history of the empire of Karangasem in East Bali. 📸 .gordie
Some interesting facts about Bali and the Balinese people.
Many of us tourists have no idea or realize how fascinating and interesting the Balinese people are and here are just a few examples.
You will find a lot of people called Wayan, Made, Nyoman or Ketut. Actually, most Balinese people are given one of these four names, male or female. It simply means ‘first born’, ‘second born’, ‘third born’ and ‘fourth born’. So, what do they call their fifth child, you may ask? Simply start over again and name him or her ‘Wayan’ again!
Balinese babies are carried everywhere the first few months of their lives, this is because they are not allowed to touch the ground. They are considered little angels, their connection to the spirits is kept intact by not touching the earth. When the time comes that they are allowed to touch the ground, a big ceremony is held.
Did you know that the Balinese New Year starts in silence? The first day of the new calendar is called Nyepi; and no one is allowed on the streets. Noise and light are to be kept at a minimum and these rules apply to everyone who is on the island including foreigners. This happens usually in the month of March and everything shuts down for one day including the airport. You cannot fly in or out on Nyepi day.
Balinese culture is rich with traditions and ceremonies. They have ceremonies for just about everything that is a part of their life. Most Balinese people truly believe that these ceremonies and blessings will bring them luck and keep them safe in traffic.
The tooth-filing ceremony is one of the most important religious ceremonies for the Balinese people that must be performed at least once in someone’s lifetime. This ceremony is symbolic for the Balinese Hindu teenagers who are ready to enter the world of maturity and adulthood. The purpose of implementing this ceremony is to remove impurities and passions in the human body and soul so that they can discover the true nature of humans.
The process begins with a Sangging offering mantra and then participants pray to God and ancestors for salvation so that the ritual runs smoothly. In the main ritual, the participants are asked to lie down, open their mouth showing their teeth. The filing ceremony of the six teeth is a symbol of filing six human natures which are considered an enemy of the human being. The participants then must put their saliva into a small coconut fruit. Three days after the ceremony the coconut fruit that contains the saliva must be thrown into the sea or river. All Hindu parents in Bali must provide and arrange this ceremony for their children.
When we visit Bali we think about the beautiful beaches, waterfalls, rice terraces, great night life in the streets of Kuta, Legian and Seminyak, the pubs, the restaurants and the delicious local cuisine.
Maybe we should show a little more interest in how truly amazing the Balinese people are and how much we can learn from them and their values of being a human being.

Today we have Odalan in on of our villa, Tis Villa Seminyak.
The Odalan celebrations are a social occasion among Indonesian Hindus, and have historically contributed to the rich tradition of theatre and Balinese dance forms. An Odalan marks the founding of a particular Hindu temple, and is celebrated on its birthday according to the Pakuwon – the 210 day Balinese calendar.
