Besakih Temple, known as the Mother Temple of Bali, is the largest and holiest Hindu temple complex on the island, located in Besakih Village, Karangasem Regency, East Bali. Nestled on the southwestern slopes of Mount Agung, Bali’s highest and most sacred volcano, the temple sits majestically about 1,000 meters above sea level — offering breathtaking views and a serene spiritual atmosphere.

Dating back more than a thousand years, Besakih is believed to have been built during the 8th century and serves as the spiritual heart of Balinese Hinduism. The complex is made up of over 80 temples, with Pura Penataran Agung Besakih as its central sanctuary. Each temple honors different deities and ancestral spirits, particularly the Hindu trinity — Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.

The temple’s design embodies the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, which emphasizes harmony between God, nature, and humanity. Its multi-level terraces and towering gateways symbolize a spiritual journey from the earthly world toward the divine.

Throughout the year, Besakih hosts many major ceremonies, the most important being Betara Turun Kabeh, when thousands of devotees from across Bali gather to pray together, celebrating faith, unity, and tradition.
