Nyepi, the day of complete silence and meditation, takes place on 31 th March 2014.

Hence the name Nyepi, meaning “to keep silent” in the local language, which falls on the day following the dark moon of the spring equinox. Nyepi is a day fully dedicated to connect oneself more closely with God through prayers and at the same time as a day of self introspection to decide on values, such as humanity, love, patience, kindness, and others, that should be kept forever.

On this day, the entire island of Bali will come to a complete standstill. To allow all to follow the prescribed ritual, all traffic all over Bali will be stopped. No planes will land or take off for 24 hours. All shops are closed. No one is allowed on the beach or on the streets.

The sudden silence comes after the eve of noisy festivities with parades of giant puppets called “ogoh-ogoh” accompanied by clanging gongs and other percussion instruments.

The Ogoh-ogoh depict the character of Bhuta or evil spirit. After the procession, the Ogoh-ogoh will be put to flame in the main ritual of Ngrupuk. The burning of the ogoh-ogoh symbolizes the eradication of any evil influences in life.

Yesterday it was New Year for Balinese or Nyepi. It's also a day of silence, fasting, and meditation.
On Nyepi day itself, every street is quiet - there are nobody doing their normal daily activities. Observed from 6 a.m. until 6 a.m. the next morning. The main restrictions are: no lighting fires; no light on the street; no people allowed outside their home; no working; no entertainment or pleasure; no traveling; and for some, no talking or eating at all, even the airport was closed. On Nyepi the world expected to be clean and everything starts anew. The Earth is given one day to breathe without pollutants; human beings are given one day to rest physically and emotionally.
Last night I was sitting in the dark at the terrace, I was thrilled to see thousands of fireflies illuminating the Sayan Gorge over the river and paddle rice field.
