Marine Research in Gili Matra - Meet Our Students

How do fish communities relate to reef habitats? How can researchers assess coral health? And what role do local communities play in coral restoration?

These are among the questions being investigated by Indonesian students currently undertaking a marine research internship at Oceans 5 Gili Air, in partnership with Marine Conservation Indonesia and the University of Mataram.

Their fieldwork takes place within the Gili Matra Marine Protected Area, connecting university studies with practical research experience around the Gili Islands.

Through our Indonesian Marine Research Scholarship, we support students who need access to underwater research locations and practical diving assistance. Here, we introduce nine students featured in the RAISE scholarship announcement and the research topics they are exploring.

Seagrass in the Gili Islands: Why It Matters for Turtles and Coral Reefs

When people think about the underwater world of the Gili Islands, they usually think about coral reefs, turtles and clear tropical water.

But between the beaches and coral reefs of Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan lies another extremely important ecosystem: seagrass meadows.

Seagrass may not look as spectacular as a colourful coral reef, but it plays an essential role in the health of the Gili Matra Marine Protected Area.

Seagrass provides habitat and food for marine animals, stabilises the seabed, traps sediment and nutrients, stores carbon and helps connect shallow coastal habitats with coral reefs.

For the Gili Islands, protecting the reef therefore means protecting more than coral.

It means protecting the entire coastal ecosystem.

Eco Divemaster Internship in Indonesia

SSI Divemaster Training with Marine Ecology Specialties

Train as an SSI Divemaster on Gili Air, Indonesia, and add five SSI Ecology specialties of your choice. This 6–8 week internship combines practical dive leadership training with classroom-based learning about marine life and the ecosystems of the Gili Islands.

Each ecology specialty takes approximately three hours and does not require a dive. You can choose the five subjects that interest you most while completing your Divemaster training at Oceans 5 Gili Air.

Gili Meno’s Underwater Statues - When an Instagram Highlight Becomes a Safety Concern

The underwater statues off Gili Meno have become one of the most photographed snorkelling spots in the Gili Islands. Images shared on Instagram have turned the site into a must-see stop for visitors staying on the Gilis and travelling from Bali. Many come hoping to snorkel above the sculptures and take their own photograph.

That popularity has changed the experience in the water. The statues sit at a depth of only around five metres. On busy days, we have observed up to 70 snorkelling boats visiting the area, with 100 or more people in the water or on boats above and around the sculptures. In such a small, shallow space, crowding is more than an inconvenience. It is a safety concern.

Your first dive starts before you enter the water 🤿

At Oceans 5 Gili Air, we begin an Introduction Dive with a short theory session. You’ll learn the basics of scuba diving, including how pressure affects your body differently at the surface and underwater.

Then it’s pool time! You can get comfortable with the equipment and practise essential skills with your instructor. Once you’re ready, we head to the ocean for your first dive. 🌊🐢
