The best way to immerse ourself in new place is exploring its local street food. Through street food, we learn the history, economical development, tradition, lifestyle and social dynamic of the region.

We took our foreigner residents out for a night to venture around Sabang street to taste the famous and legendary street food from Indonesia.

Rujak buah (fruit salad with pungent dressing), kue rangi (sago and grated coconut cake with a spread of liquid brown sugar), nasi goreng kambing (goat fried rice), gudeg (sweet jackfruit stew), mie ayam (chicken noodle), gorengan (fritters) were springing up around the side street and all of us got the chance to taste them all.

It's true that street food could really be able to connect people even with different culture and also as a media to experience how it feels like living like locals.

CoHaus Neighborhood

High-end housings usually are associated with a lush and posh neighborhood. Concrete-blocked paving alleys, rows of well-maintained trees, street vendors selling all kinds of small snacks, then street lamps installed in order. That’s what the residents are supposed to see. In another side, things differ at CoHaus housings.

Located at Tanah Baru street, which is side by side with its luxurious neighborhood of Permata Hijau, CoHaus accidentally brings a series of everyday life nodes where locals interacting with sellers at morning market, motorcycle rider looking at bird shop’s collections, then children riding back and forth with their bicycles, and middle-aged housewives making small talk in food shops ‘warung’. For some group, it’s well described as one disasterous sight. But also as one beautifully chaotic sight for some.

One of our guest who’s professing as chef and baker were inspired from how the grocer displays their gourds, broad bens, or papayas and how they fry their banana and tauge-filled tofus which make as delightful afternoon snacks.
When this comes to each perception, it depends on personal preferences. However, we would like to embrace this unique kind of neighborhood as a delightful treat to our residents. We're thankful for this city's village existence.

It’s almost the end of June, let’s enjoy Jakarta!

Taking our residents to learn and drink Jamu (traditional Indonesian herbal medicine)!⁣🌱⁣

Together we saw how Beras Kencur (aromatic galangal mixed with rice) and Kunyit Asam (turmeric & tamarind) were made using V60 and latte techniques just like how coffee is made. They call it .⁣🌱⁣

Thank you Acaraki for helping us to host our residents!

[Culture Understanding]

Some of our guests from US experienced a bit of unusual encounter with locals when visiting some tourist objects in Jakarta. As many have heard, locals tend to ask for a picture with our guests. Some were okay with it, but some felt very uncomfortable.

When visiting Mangrove forest in North Jakarta, one of our guests even had to face about 15 people snapping pictures with her- without her permissions. In addition to that, they may stare at you whenever walking in the street. What're all these about? 🤣

The main reason they do that is because of the low awareness level about foreign culture. Not all people in Indonesia have high exposure and interaction to a multi-cultural environment. Mostly the middle class and above have traveled abroad, casually interacting with the foreigners there.

With foreigners coming to the common neighborhood in Indonesia, this attracts curiosity and excitement that may result in staring or aggressive photo taking moments. 🧐

While the locals need to realize by doing so is inappropriate and making foreigner uncomfortable, foreigners just may need to take time to cope with that as they try to interact and respond in polite manners to the locals. Communication and culture understanding help to break the walls 😎
