The Tana Toraja Regency (Toraja land) in South Sulawesi, is one of Indonesia’s best kept cultural secrets. A place where a persons death is the most important event in one’s life, the unique culture and history of the region is fascinating. The Toraja people perform complex funeral ceremonies, known as Rambu Solo. They believe that the most important thing about one’s life is their death and as such their life rituals are practically all in preparation for the corresponding burial rituals.

One of the interesting things about Jeneponto is their horse eating culture. The meat is the choice of Jeneponto people. The taste of horse meat is more fibrous than beef. Horse meat actually taste more tender, it contains a lot of protein, and a little less fat. The meal Coto Kuda is also recognised as an alternative medicine to cure asthma, TB, epilepsy, ATS, cure body aches and get rheumatism and increase body vitality.

The Region of South Sulawesi has a strong horse-culture with ba****ck races organised usually on Sundays. On this day, horses with their owners can been seen on the lagoon in a wide variety of displays. Some depictions of horses on rock art suggest that horses may have been in Indonesia longer than the conventional 13th century, when horses were thought to be introduced with the Chinese. Some bits are speculative, but it is a fascinating nonetheless.
