The biennial full moon of East Bali

Every two years, Jasri and two neighbouring villages come alive for three days and three nights to celebrate Purnama Kapat, the full moon of the fourth month in the Balinese calendar.

It is a beautiful time of transition. The first flowers begin to bloom, the dry season slowly gives way to the rains, and the whole island seems to pause and prepare for what comes next.

For these three days, the roads become part of the celebration. Thousands of worshippers gather, carrying offerings, wearing their finest sarongs and parading sacred artefacts to the various temples.

There is something deeply moving about being here during a full moon like this. You don't just watch the full moon; you feel it.

So, if you ever find yourself in East Bali during Purnama Kapat, put on your sarong, step into the crowd, and let the moonlight do its thing.

Ever wondered where your dinner comes from?

There are plenty of fish in the sea, but here at Hidden Heaven, you can actually get to know where some of them come from.

Get up early and head out with local fishermen in a traditional Balinese jukung. You can try your hand at fishing, see how they work the sea, or stop along the way to snorkel and watch the fish going about their business in the water.

Fancy fish for dinner? Your host will prepare it with as much love as there are fish in the sea. Somehow, it just tastes better when you’ve seen where it came from.

Why would you want to feel at home when you're on holiday?

East Bali. Land of real people, unreal landscapes and flying dragons.

Bali is famous for its kites, and in the dry, windy months the skies around East Bali can be full of them. Some are beautifully simple and small, some intricately splendid, and some are huge. The biggest can be 10 metres or more from nose to tail.

And there be dragons, too: the Janggan. More than spectacular-looking kites, they represent Naga Basuki, the mythical serpent believed to circle the earth and help keep the world in balance. How about that for a nice-to-have on your holiday?

Kite flying is a big part of Balinese life, with competitions, village teams, elaborate craftsmanship, and a lot of pride involved.

But for us, it’s often the simple moments we love most. Looking up from the garden, the rice fields or the ocean and suddenly seeing a giant dragon drifting across the sky.

Moments like this remind us why we love Bali so much.

Have you ever tried bakso ayam?

These tasty chicken meatballs, served with angel-hair noodles in a flavoursome broth and sauce, with as much chilli as you dare, are the perfect bite when you're out walking or spending the day at the beach.

Vendors sell them from their kaki lima - literally “five feet”. Traditionally, these mobile food stalls stood on two wheels and a supporting stick (three “feet”), with the vendor providing the other two.

You'll often find satay, lumpia and other local favourites nearby. And that's what makes a stroll through the local hotspots of East Bali such a treat.
