✨ Fish Friday Featured ✨

In these photos you see a male ring-tailed cardinal fish, Ostorhinchus aureus or Ostorhinchus fleurieu. It is mouthbrooding a cluster of fertilized eggs in its mouth to protect them from predators. 🎏

Paternal Mouthbrooding:
The male will hold and incubate the eggs in his mouth for approximately two weeks 14 days before they hatch. 🥚🐣
During this entire incubation window, the father fasts completely and cannot eat, relying entirely on stored body energy so he doesn’t accidentally swallow his offspring. To keep the developing embryos healthy, he periodically opens his jaws slightly to churn, clean, and aerate the egg mass with fresh, oxygenated water.

✨Fish Friday Featured✨
Today’s fish is a robust ghost pipefish Solenostomus cyanopterus, blending in with the sandy and algae-covered bottom. 👻🐟
It is very well camouflaged resembling a piece of drifting debris or seaweed.
Their colour is deep reddish-brown which provides an effective disguise against the dark benthic substrate.
They use their fan-like fins for hovering over the bottom in between the seagrass, where they can hide very well from predators.
