Bali is home to many traditions that have been passed down through generations, and Tenganan has one of the most unique. Each year, during the Usaba Sambah ceremony, the village holds Perang Pandan, or Mekare-kare, where boys and men take part in a ritual using thorny pandan leaves to honour Dewa Indra, the Hindu god of war and weather, and learn courage, responsibility, and respect within their community.
