Music is woven into the fabric of Balinese life, and this past weekend, on August 1st, we celebrated music on Tumpek Krulut. 🎶

Tumpek Krulut is celebrated every 210 days, according to the Balinese calendar, and is a day dedicated to love, compassion, and the arts, particularly music. It is a time to give thanks and bless the instruments that bring communities together in celebration, prayer, and storytelling.

And at the heart of the Balinese musical tradition is the gamelan.

The beautifully layered melodies of the gamelan seem to mirror the spirit of the island of Bali with their vibrant complexity and deep spirituality that manages to soothe the soul without needing a single word. Each performance reflects centuries of tradition passed lovingly from one generation to the next.

If you have a chance to hear some gamelan on your travels through Bali, take a moment to pause and really listen. You may discover that some of the island's most beautiful stories are told not through words, but through music. 🎵

How many dive resorts can boast of having a large wreck on their house reef? 🛥️

One of the best things about diving with us is that you don't have to travel far to experience Bali's most fascinating wreck dives. Just a short ride down the shore, you can dive the USAT Liberty, but if even that seems too far, head to the Boga Wreck!

Just west of the resort, this purpose-sunk vessel has transformed into a thriving underwater ecosystem. The Dutch-built coastguard ship is over 40 meters long and rests on its keel between 18 and 35 meters, creating an impressive silhouette against the blue.

Since being sunk to create a new habitat for marine life, nature has worked its magic. What was once bare metal is now draped in colorful soft corals, feather stars, hydrozoans, sponges, and sea squirts. And where the reef grows, marine life follows. 🐠

Schools of fusiliers and batfish circle the wreck, moray eels often peer out from below deck, and if you look closely, you'll find nudibranchs, shrimps, leaf fish, scorpionfish, and a variety of reef fish that have made the Boga their permanent home. On lucky days, a turtle or a majestic Napoleon wrasse may even stop by to inspect the visitors.

The wreck's depth makes it particularly well-suited to Advanced divers, as well as those interested in developing their skills through a wreck or deep diving specialty course.

And the best part is that this incredible underwater world is right on our doorstep, so you can dive it as many times as you like! 🤿

One of the greatest summer pleasures is spending a warm afternoon by the pool. ✨

The best part is that here in Bali, pool season never really ends. We're lucky enough to enjoy warm temperatures and pool weather all year round.

One of the best ways to get to know a country is through its food, and Indonesia tells quite a story.🍽️

This vast archipelago is home to countless culinary traditions, each shaped by geography, history, trade, and culture. The result is a cuisine that is as diverse and vibrant as the country itself.

One of the best ways to experience a culture is through its food, and Indonesia certainly knows a thing or two about satisfying a sweet tooth. There's no shortage of delicious things for you to try during your travels.

Ready to add some sweet vocabulary to your Indonesian?

🍬 Manis – Sweet

🍬 Gula – Sugar

🍬 Coklat – Chocolate (note that C is always pronounced like "ch")

🍬 Kue – Cake

🍬 Madu – Honey

🍬 Pandan – tropical leaf used to color Indonesian desserts green and flavor them

🍬 Martabak manis – thick, fluffy, pancake filled with chocolate, cheese, peanuts, and condensed milk

🍬 Dadar gulung – green pandan crêpe rolled and filled with freshly grated coconut and palm sugar

Some underwater encounters stop you in your tracks, not because they're particularly rare, but because they're just so wonderfully weird.

Enter the striped eel catfish. 🐈

If you've ever seen a school of them moving across the sandy bottom, you'll know exactly what we mean. Rather than swimming side by side neatly like most fish that school, they travel in tightly packed groups, weaving over one another in a constantly shifting mass. From a distance, they look less like individual fish and more like a living, breathing wave floating across the reef. 🌊

As they move, they're busy searching for lunch, using their sensitive barbels (the whisker-like appendages around their mouths) to detect small crustaceans, worms, and other tasty morsels hidden in the sand.

They're absolutely mesmerizing to watch. Many divers stop for a quick minute to observe them... and then realize they've spent ten.

It's the juveniles that tend to stay in especially tight groups, creating those hypnotic swirling formations divers love to photograph. And we'll never get tired of seeing these wonderful creatures sweeping across the sand.💙
