Every diver gets excited when a turtle glides past, a reef shark appears in the blue, or a massive manta ray sweeps overhead, blocking out the light with their massive body. And rightly so, those are bucket list moments many divers dream about. 🤿

But some of the reef's most fascinating residents are much smaller and have much bigger personalities.

Slow down and take a closer look, and you'll discover all sorts of tiny critters packed with character. Small, curious eyes peeking out from holes in the reef, watching over their territory from their secret hiding places. Some look grumpy, some look curious, and some seem genuinely offended that you've interrupted their day.

Many of these little fish spend their whole lives on the same section of reef, fiercely protecting their tiny kingdom from intruders. What they lack in size, they more than make up for in attitude.

Next time you're underwater, take a moment to hover quietly until the reef gets used to your presence, and you can watch it up close. You'll be rewarded with some of the most curious faces and dramatic personalities that you've ever seen, a whole world of beautiful, feisty characters that are easy to miss when you're searching for the big stuff.🪸

You don’t have to go far to get to one of Bali’s most exciting wreck dives. Just west of our house reef lies the Boga Wreck, a site that perfectly blends the joy of wreck exploration and thriving marine life. ⚓

Deliberately sunk in September 2012 to create a new habitat, this 45-meter Dutch-built coastguard ship didn’t stay quiet for long. Within weeks, marine life began to move in, and today, the wreck is alive with color, covered in soft corals, feather stars, hydrozoans, sponges, and sea squirts. 🪸

Resting upright on its keel between 18 and 35 meters, the Boga offers an incredible playground for divers. You can swim through the lower deck, explore hidden corners, and pass through openings that lead up to the upper levels.

Look closely, and you’ll find honeycomb moray eels tucked in crevices, while crabs and shrimps have made the wreck their home. Out in the blue, schools of barracuda often cruise by, and if luck is on your side, a Napoleon wrasse or even a curious turtle might make an appearance. 🐢

From reef fish and nudibranchs to leaf fish and wrasses, the biodiversity here is incredible, living proof of how quickly the ocean reclaims anything manmade.

As a deeper site, the Boga is perfect for Advanced and Wreck divers. And if you’re not quite there yet, there’s no better place to take the next step in your diving journey- our experienced instructors will have you certified in no time.

A big adventure, just a short swim from home. 🌊

One of the most beautiful parts of Balinese culture is the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, which means the three causes of well-being or the three paths to harmony. It is a guiding principle of daily life here, centered around balance.

The three pillars of harmony are:

🌺Harmony with God (Parahyangan),

🌺Harmony with other people (Pawongan), and

🌺Harmony with nature and the environment (Palemahan).

Together, these three relationships create the foundation for a peaceful and balanced life.

You can see this philosophy everywhere in Bali, like in the small daily offerings known as canang sari. These beautiful woven palm-leaf baskets, filled with flowers, rice, incense, and sometimes small gifts of food, are placed outside homes, temples, shops, ancient trees, and even on the street each morning.

They may seem simple, but they carry deep meaning, an expression of gratitude, respect, and a way to connect us with God using elements of nature. Each flower has its own symbolism, each offering is a moment of mindfulness, and each prayer helps maintain harmony between the spiritual and physical worlds.

It’s a beautiful reflection of life in Bali: not separate from nature, but deeply connected to it. And a reminder that peace is often found in the harmony that comes from the smallest daily rituals. ✨

Happy World Turtle Day! 🐢

Today, we celebrate one of the ocean's best-loved residents. Sea turtles that have been gliding through the oceans for millions of years, real ocean dinosaurs. There are 7 species of sea turtles, and in Indonesia, we're lucky enough to encounter 6 of them: green turtle, hawksbill, olive ridley, leatherback, flatback, and even the loggerhead turtle.

For us as divers, seeing a turtle never gets old. You might find one calmly grazing along the reef, nibbling on algae or coral, helping to keep the ecosystem in balance. Others drift effortlessly through the blue, or rise slowly to the surface for a breath before disappearing again into the depths. And if you’re really lucky, you might spot one enjoying a jellyfish snack. 🪼

A few fun facts:

🐢 Sea turtles can hold their breath for several hours while sleeping on the seafloor, wedging themselves under rocks or crevices so they don't drift off.

🐢 They often return to the very same beach where they were born to lay their eggs.

🐢 Despite their gentle appearance, they are powerful long-distance swimmers, traveling thousands of kilometers across oceans.

But these incredible creatures face many challenges. Plastic pollution, habitat loss, fishing nets, and climate change all threaten their survival. That’s why protecting their environment is so important.

Every time we choose to reduce waste and support conservation efforts, we help ensure that future generations will still be able to experience the quiet magic of swimming alongside these ancient ocean travelers. 💙

Rising high above the island, Mount Agung is far more than Bali’s tallest peak. For the Balinese Hindu community, it is the spiritual heart of the island, a sacred mountain believed to be the dwelling place of the gods. ⛰️

Gunung Agung is seen as a symbol of divine power and balance, a place where the connection between nature, humanity, and the spiritual world feels strongest. Many of Bali’s most important temples, ceremonies, and daily offerings are aligned in relation to the mountain, honoring its presence and seeking harmony between the seen and unseen worlds.

It is a place of deep reverence, where rituals are performed to maintain balance and show gratitude.

Here in East Bali, we are lucky to live with Mount Agung always in view, majestic, powerful, and ever-present as it watches over us. Its silhouette is a constant reminder of the island’s spirit and the energy that makes Bali so unique.

Between the ocean at our doorstep and this sacred mountain rising behind us, it’s impossible not to feel connected to something greater. ✨
