🤿 As an Instructor, You Need to Think Underwater
Before every training dive, an instructor should have a clear plan for how to organize the students. Your position and their position should allow you to communicate, observe and maintain control.
But the moment you go underwater, the situation can change.
You may discover that the organization you planned on the surface doesn't work as well as you thought. Perhaps you don't have the overview you want, a student needs extra attention, or the environment makes another setup more practical.
Don't be afraid to change it.
Move yourself. Reposition your students. Try a different setup.
Changing your organization underwater doesn't mean your preparation was wrong. It means you are paying attention to what is actually happening.
This is something we focus on during the SSI Instructor Training Course at Oceans 5 Gili Air.
We don't want instructor candidates to memorize where they are supposed to stand.
We want them to understand why they choose a certain position, whether it is working, and when they need to change it.
An instructor shouldn't just execute a plan.
Observe. Think. Adapt. Stay in control.

The SSI Instructor Training Course at Oceans 5 Gili Air is built around one simple idea: your training should prepare you for the reality of being a dive instructor.
That’s why we keep our instructor courses personal, practical and realistic.

🎥 Video analysis allows you to see yourself teaching. Together we look at positioning, demonstrations, communication, student control and how you respond when something doesn’t go according to plan.

Why Are We Teaching Divers to Hover Like Buddha? 🤿
We have all seen it during dive training: the Buddha hover, sitting upright in the water with crossed legs.
It might demonstrate that a diver can maintain neutral buoyancy, but there is one problem: this is not how we actually dive.
When we dive, we want to be horizontal, streamlined, neutrally buoyant and in control. So why shouldn't we teach students to hover in the same position they will actually use underwater?
During the SSI Instructor Training Course (ITC) at Oceans 5 Gili Air, we focus on teaching skills in a realistic diving position. Instructor candidates learn how to demonstrate and teach hovering while maintaining a proper horizontal position.
Because instructor training shouldn't only prepare you to pass an evaluation.
It should prepare you to teach real divers in the real world.

🎓 SSI Instructor Training: Preparing You for Real-Life Teaching 🤿

The SSI Instructor Training Course (ITC) is not only about learning the skills and handling the problems you might encounter during your SSI Instructor Evaluation.

At Oceans 5 Gili Air, we want to prepare our instructor candidates for something even more important: real life as a dive instructor.

That is why video analysis is an important part of our SSI ITC. 🎥
During training sessions, we record our instructor candidates while they are teaching. Afterwards, we analyze the videos together.

We look at questions such as:

👉 How do you recognize and solve problems?

Already a dive instructor with another training agency and thinking about adding SSI to your professional qualifications? This August, Oceans 5 Gili Air is offering a special opportunity.

Starting 20 August 2026, Oceans 5 Gili Air will organize a special 10-day SSI Instructor Crossover Course, specifically designed for certified dive instructors from other recognized training organizations who would like to become SSI professionals.

The course will take place at Oceans 5 Gili Air, an SSI Instructor Training Center with more than 16 years of experience in scuba diving education on the Gili Islands. The program will be guided by SSI Instructor Trainer Warren “Waz” Beyers.
