The Village:
The village is on the coast and a short boat ride from the beautiful Sudak, Kedis and Nanggu islands. It is a small village with very basic facilities but the inhabitants take pride in its upkeep. There are ten or so families living there and many of the villagers are related. This makes for a very friendly and hospitable environment. Many in the village are farmers or fisherman and
all welcome the opportunity to befriend new people. The Accommodation:
You will be staying with Andar and his family (he has a wife and a young son) and will be provided with a private room with electricity and a fan. There is an Indonesian style toilet and simple washing facilities. You'll be treated as a member of the family and be invited to participate in their daily activities. Volunteering:
Everyday Andar teaches an English class to the village children. As a volunteer, you'll be asked to help out or give classes. Not only does this lead to the children improving their English, but also provides an opportunity for them to learn about different cultures. As much creativity and game playing as possible is encouraged, and any previous experience teaching children is greatly beneficial. Things to Do:
Aside from teaching the children, the days are your own! The village is located in a beautiful spot and there are many white sand beaches within short walking distances. While there, why not also take advantage of the following activities...
Swim and snorkel, exploring the ocean (Andar has a mask and snorkel to lend you)
Walk to the hilltop and watch sunrise and sunset
Practice yoga or meditation with views out over the islands from the hilltop
Island hop to Gili Sudak, Gili Kedis, Gili Tangkong, and Gili Nanggu
Help Andar's wife prepare meals and learn traditional Indonesian recipes. What's on the Menu?:
Andar's wife and mother share the cooking duties and are fantastic in the kitchen. A typical meal consists of rice, vegetables and tofu. If Andar's brother has been fishing, there will also be fish on the menu. They can cater to individual tastes (depending on your spice tolerance!) and also take into account any allergies you may have. The Cost:
This program requires a minimum stay of three nights but a longer stay is far more beneficial both for the volunteer and the villagers (especially the children). The price includes a private room, 3 meals a day, fruit, water and coffee throughout the day and activities.
1 day/night: IDR 200.000
What to Bring:
Travel light! Long sleeved clothes and repellent are a good idea for early evening to give protection from mosquitoes, and sun cream is advisable to use during the day. Getting in Contact:
