🇬🇧 The Broadclub Cuttlefish (Ascarosepion latimanus) observes its surroundings with its highly developed eyes. It also closely scrutinizes divers; are they, as usual, peacefully pleased to see me, or do they intend to pet me again? Then the jet propulsion quickly kicks in, a cloud of ink erupts, and the otherwise curious creature vanishes.

🇩🇪 Die Breitarm Sepia (Ascarosepion latimanus) beobachtet mit ihren hochentwickelten Augen ihre Umgebung. Auch Taucher nimmt sie genau ins Visier; sind sie wie meist friedlich erfreut mich zu sehen oder wollen sie wieder an mir rumfingern? Dann kommt schnell der Rückstoßantrieb eine Tintenwolke und das ansonsten neugierige Tier ist verschwunden.

🇬🇧 A juvenil Palette Surgeonfish (Paracanthurus hepatus) lives with a bunch of Reticulated Dascyllus (Dascyllus reticulatus) in a table coral (Acropora spec.). Here, they can retreat among the individual coral branches when danger threatens, such as these air-breathing photon capturer (UW Photographer). Otherwise, they remain above the coral, feeding on the passing plakton.

🇩🇪 Ein juveniler Paletten Doktorfisch (Paracanthurus hepatus) lebt mit einer Horde Netz-Preussenfischen (Dascyllus reticulatus) in einer Tischkoralle (Acropora spec.). Hierher können sie sich bei drohender Gefahr, wie die von Photonen einfangenden Luftatmern ausgeht, zwischen die einzelnen Korallenäste zurückziehen. Ansonsten stehen sie darüber und bereichern sich am vorbeiströmenden Plakton.

🇬🇧 The Golden Wentletrap (Epidendrium sordidum) searching for its food. On overhangs it feeds on Orange Cup Coral (Tubastraea faulkneri). It sucks out the coral tissue with its long siphon, like a straw. The yellow color acts as camouflage.

🇩🇪 Die Wendeltreppenschnecke (Epidendrium sordidum) auf der Suche nach ihrer Nahrung. An Überhängen Zuhause ernährt sie sich von den Orange-Gelben Kelchkorallen (Tubastraea faulkneri). Dessen Gewebe saugt sie mit ihrem langen Syphon, wie mit einem Strohhalm aus. Die gelbe Farbe wirkt dann als Tarnung.

🇬🇧 Some Anemones (Actiniaria) can detach from their substrate and rhythmically beat their tentacles, like a jellyfish with its bell, to move around. This behavior is only observed when the previous location no longer provides sufficient food or when a predator has just attacked.

🇩🇪 Einige Anemonen (Actiniaria) können sich vom Untergrund lösen und mit ihren Tentakeln, wie eine Qualle mit ihrem Schirm, rytmisch schlagen um sich fortzubewegen. Dieses Verhalten wird nur beobachtet, wenn der voherige Platz nicht mehr ausreichend Futter bereitstellt oder ein Freßfeind gerade dabei war anzugreifen.

🇬🇧 A Doubletooth Soldierfish (Myripristis hexagona) hides in a sponge. Only at night does it venture out in search of its favorite food: crustacean larvae and larger zooplankton. It can reach a length of up to 30 cm.

🇩🇪 Ein Soldatenfisch (Myripristis hexagona) versteckt sich in einem Schwamm. Erst in der Nacht geht er auf die Suche nach seinem Lieblingsfutter, Krustentierlarven und größeren Zooplankton. Er kann bis zu 30 cm Länge erreichen.

🇬🇧 The Banana Nudibranch (Notodoris minor) feeds on calcareous sponges of the family Leucettidae. Calcareous spicules are found in the sponge tissue and protect it from many predators. N. minor ingests these spicules and uses them as a defense mechanism in its skin. It can reach a length of up to 10 cm and is well camouflaged on the yellow sponge.

🇩🇪 Die Bananen-Nacktschnecke (Notodoris minor) ernährt sich von Kalkschwämmen der Familie Leucettidae. Kalknadeln sind im Schwammgewebe und schützen vor vielen Freßfeinden. N. minor nimmt sie aber auf und nutzt sie in ihrer Haut als Abwehrmittel. Sie kann bis zu 10 cm länge erreichen, und ist auf dem gelben Schwamm gut getarnt.

🇬🇧 The Tassled Scorpionfish (Scorpaenopsis oxycephalus) is a large ambush predator, reaching up to 40 cm in length. It often lies in exposed locations, well camouflaged by its many beard-like contour-resolving appendages and, of course, its color, which it can adapt to its surroundings. It is always a rewarding subject for photography, patiently remaining still and allowing the photographer interesting views.

🇩🇪 Der Bärtiger Drachenkopf (Scorpaenopsis oxycephalus) ist ein großer Lauerjäger, er kann bis zu 40 cm Länge erreichen. Häufig liegt er an exponierten Stellen gut getarnt durch seine vielen, konturauflösenden Bart ähnlichen Anhängsel und natürlich der Farbe, die er dem jeweiligen Verhältnissen anpassen kann. Es ist immer wieder ein dankbares Fotomodel, dass bei ruhigem Taktieren geduldig liegen bleibt und dem Fotografen nette Einblicke ermöglicht.
