Initially, I thought the name Molana is derived from 'Maulana', that somehow connected with the realm of African Islamic authority which could be brought by Ternate/Tidore Sultanate (I believe it was their territory in 1500-1600).
Until later I learned the possibility of Molana also could be derived from 'Moana', which is a Polynesian term for 'large body of water' (of ocean).. this because Maluku also share linguistic fam with other Polynesian (such as Hawaii, Samoa, Maori).

Another reference to note, a friend from Natuna Islands, who is known as a cultural reference point for native Natuna once said that the term Molana means 'The King of The Sea' or merely 'The Sea Authority'

From the local historical lore, I could not trace beyond the story of Kapitan Loupatty from Portuguese era (1200-ish).
