Magical rural West Bali
Pondok Matekap is a new 3 bedroom beach house situated uniquely in West Bali in an elevated position amongst gardens, rice terraces, plantation,hills,sea and beach! My wife and I were staying for a few months in a little ramshackle hut directly on the sand further down the beach. On our walks along the beach we used to look up at the position our house now stands and wonder how great the view must be from there. After waves in the hut and looking for space to house my wife and I and our rescue dogs (that acquired us!!) the elevation became even more appealing and then a farmer cut his thumb and the rest is history....
The pondok (house) was based around an antique Limasan teak wood structure which forms the main living and kitchens areas and has a natural alang alang (grass) roof. The bedrooms have green roofs and the design is based on my experience of 12 years tropical living in Bali. With periods of extended torrential rain these practical designs make for a very peaceful enjoyable experience rather than the clatter from more regular roofs . We took care that there is an interesting vista from every spot in the house as we knew there would be some serious relaxing to be done once the project was completed!
Timber used in construction is 100% recycled and we used local materials where possible hence the lava/paras stone for bathroom walls and bata merah (red brick) for the ornamental external walls. We used a multi purpose non toxic sealer for plastered and wood surfaces. We have our own water supply and over time we will introduce solar energy.
There is so much to explore in this area with great variety along the beach, from expansive beach (you can run and walk for miles) to circular cliff Mejan beach (20 minutes walk) with a small waterfall where your hosts tied the knot. There are waterfalls to explore, world class surfing and beginners instruction at Balian and body boarding directly on our beach. Nearby Balian has a good selection of cafes and takes 35 minutes to walk to along the beach and cliff (5 mins by scooter).
