Nasi Liwet, often associated with the tradition called “Ngeliwet,” is a communal dining culture from Indonesia, especially popular in West Java and Surakarta. In this tradition, people gather together to eat rice and side dishes served on long banana leaves. The meal usually includes chicken, salted fish, tofu, tempeh, sambal, and fresh vegetables.
The rice is cooked with coconut milk and aromatic spices such as bay leaves and lemongrass, giving it a rich and savory flavor. More than just a meal, Ngeliwet represents togetherness, friendship, and family bonding because everyone shares the food in a warm and informal atmosphere.
Today, Ngeliwet has become increasingly popular as a cultural dining experience that reflects Indonesian hospitality and traditions. Many families, communities, and restaurants continue to preserve this unique culinary tradition.
