NYEPI DAY - Balinese Day of Silent
Nyepi day is the Balinese “Day of Silent”. It is a day of silence, fasting and meditation. It takes place on the spring solstice and this year it is falls on 9th March 2016. It is commemorated every year according to the Balinese calendar. Nyepi is also celebrated as Balinese New Year (Saka New Year), one of the most important and unusual among Bali’s many festive day. Nyepi day is derived from word “sepi” means silent . Unlike anywhere else on the planet, Balinese are not celebrate the New Year with lavish party, but celebrate the coming year with silence, meditation and self reflection. Observed from 6am until 6am in the next morning.
Balinese are obliged to carry out Catur Brata Penyepian. These are no fire (amati geni), no work/activities (amati karya), no amusement (amati lelanguan) and no traveling (amati lelungan) and for some event no talking or eating at all. The result is total silence throughout the island for 24 hours.
Non-Hindu residents and tourists are not exempt from the restrictions. They are free to do as they wish inside their hotels, no one is allowed onto the streets. The only airport in Bali remains closed for the entire day as well. The only exceptions granted are for emergency vehicles responding to life-threatening conditions and women about to give birth.
