Blessed Saraswati Day
Rahajeng Rahina Saraswati. Have a blessing on this day ☀️
With island-wide celebration of Hari Raya Saraswati that falls on Saniscara Watugunung (Saturday meets the week named Watugunung in Balinese calendar), it is appropriate to offer a paean to Bali’s bountiful World of Books. The etymological derivation of Saraswati is found in the Old Javanese words sara (weapon), swa (line) and ti (behavior), meaning that the goddess is a source of knowledge that serves as a weapon to guide behavior along a positive path. Put another way, knowledge must be used to uncover the truth and confront the past.
Hari Raya Saraswati is a day of thanks to this beloved goddess for bringing education and wisdom to the world, and being the guardian spirit of the creative arts, learning, and knowledge. In her four arms, the goddess holds objects that symbolize the types of knowledge that she propagates: palm leaf manuscript (literature), stringed musical instrument (music named wina), prayer beads (the eternal nature of knowledge) and a lotus blossom (the divine nature of wisdom). Within the center’s confines one wanders through a spiritual and physical landscape of lush gardens and a variety of trees and flowers where offerings are made to the goddess every day.
On this day, all books are taken out and dusted, then presented as an offering to be blessed. Special attention is paid to Bali’s oldest “books,” sacred lontar palm leaf manuscripts, which have been taken out from valuable collections, cleansed and blessed by priests and put on exhibit in the Puja Saraswati ritual.
