Sisters are doing it for themselves! April 21 was Kartini Day: Indonesia’s Women Emancipation Day to commemorate Raden Ajeng Kartini, (1879-1904) the first Indonesian feminist and a national heroine. We honour her struggle in advocating for the rights of Indonesian women, particularly in gaining equal access to education, opportunities and roles in society. Made joined with local women to celebrate Kartini and every woman whose journey is still unfolding, still growing, still becoming! 🙋‍♀️🙆‍♀️👩‍🦽👩‍🦯‍➡️🚶‍♀️🧘‍♀️🤽🚣‍♀️

The knives are out! Don’t panic, Lily Laners as it was Tumpek Landep: a ceremony for everything metal. Originally it was to pay homage to ancestral heritage such as daggers, however, now Balinese bless all items made of metal including cars, motorcycles …. In the early days the keris (knife) was one of the few objects made of metal and so it was an important object. Now it is a reminder to be as ‘sharp’ as possible in your thinking to overcome poverty and ignorance, and to resist negative temptations like jealousy, anger, hate, greed, & laziness. Now there’s some clever thinking! Go Bali!

Happy Birthday to our family temple! Today is the anniversary celebration of the temple’s founding. In Balinese Hindu belief, temples are considered living spiritual spaces that must be honoured and spiritually renewed on their special day. Today’s ancient ceremony offered our guests a rare glimpse into Lily Lane’s private spiritual centre where we perform daily offerings and ceremonial rituals to honour ancestors and deities. Come & join us for more of these special experiences! 🕉

Today as Bali embraces the sacred stillness of Nyepi, the Lily Lane team would like to extend our warm wishes to our guests and the wonderful community of the village of Penestanan Kelod. Nyepi is a beautiful time of reflection and renewal – one day for the island to pause and reconnect with what truly matters. We are deeply grateful to be part of such a rich and meaningful culture. Selamat Hari Raya Nyepi!

Last night, Bali unleashed its demons! This is Ogoh-Ogoh, one of the most unforgettable traditions to witness. Giant handcrafted demon sculptures parade through the streets to drive out evil spirits accompanied by the rhythmic music of the gamelan & the energy of the community. It is a mesmerizing expression where art, culture, and spirituality intertwine in a powerful display of unity and devotion. One night of chaos 🫨 and then today complete stillness! 🤫

Watch out, Lily Laners! Wayan is checking on the two grotesque Ogoh-Ogoh monsters that will move through our village of Penestanan on Wed 18 March in a grand parade of loud gamelan music. The main purpose of Nyepi (Balinese New Year) is to cleanse the island of negative energy and start the new year fresh! Previously the worst demons have included Donald Trump and influencers taking selfies! Given the state of the world – maybe they need to make another appearance? 🤔

So what are our guests doing? Well, there's something for everyone! Some just enjoy room service to their villa, a massage in our Day Spa, and relax in their private pool; or breakfast with the baby owls followed by shopping downtown; some visit temples to learn about Hindu life and others want action: white water rafting, ATV's, downhill bike riding, waterfalls ... Too much choice? Use our local advice to customise your activities with a great guide/driver. All good? Great - see you soon! 🎉🦉♥

Thank you Wayan for your care of these magical creatures! 🙏 On a small scale, we have helped rewild injured or abandoned owls. Owls have a long history of having the privilege to portray mythical depictions in many cultures and the world grew very fond of Hedwig, Harry Potter’s owl! Owner Wayan has learned a lot about their care eg owls are able to turn their heads because they have a blood-pooling system that supports their brains and eyes and they have 14 vertebrae -double the amount in normal birds. We all love to see them recover & Wayan thinks they deserve double the love while they’re with us! 🦉🦉
