Today is Balinese New Year: Nyepi meaning ‘to keep silent’. It is the most magical and unique date on the Balinese calendar, found nowhere else in the world. With the streets cleared and exorcised, any returning evil forces will believe that Bali has been abandoned, as no one can be heard or seen throughout the island. Thus, these demonic forces leave, allowing for a clean start to the New Year. The day is reserved for self-reflection, where people must stay home. No work, no travel, including tourists who MUST NOT leave their hotel or villa. It is a day of reflection, meditation and restraint. All shops are closed; even the airport and ports. Pecalang (village police) patrol the streets to ensure everyone is following the rules. There are no exceptions other than medical emergencies. These rules create a magical peaceful landscape where we can go back in time from millennial tech. Another one for your travel bucket list!

Heads up, Lily Laners! The monsters are on the loose! After a full year of accumulating impurities, Bali needs to be completely cleansed during the day and at night, so all the demons of Bali are symbolically let loose on the roads in a carnival of fantastic monsters, the Ogoh-Ogohs. The young people of our village have been preparing and sculpting enormous papier-mâché monsters which, last night, on the night before Nyepi, were paraded through the streets with loud music, bursts of fire and people lining the streets to add to the community spirit. The name ogoh ogoh is taken from Balinese “ogah-ogah” which means something which is shaken. In fact, when ogoh-ogoh is paraded around it is always shaken by the carriers of ogoh ogoh to make it look like it is moving or dancing. It’s a spectacular contrast to the silent day of serenity that follows today, This is another fabulous event for your Travel To Do List! Join us 29 March 2025!

On Saturday, Kuningan, marked the end of the Galungan holiday which began on 28 Feb. Balinese believe that Kuningan is when their ancestors return to heaven after visiting the earth during the ten days of Galungan celebrations. So yesterday to celebrate the departure of the spirits, Lily Lane joined with the people of our village of Penestanan at the village temple in the early morning and again near sunset. The Barong, a mythical beast believed to restore the balance of good and evil, paraded through the streets and was then returned to the temple. The colour, laughter, music and fabulous offerings were intoxicating! Put a visit to us at this time of year on your To Do list!

Today, on International Women’s Day, the United Nations has designated the year 2024's theme as 'Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress.' Here at Lily Lane, we see this theme played out on a daily basis! This year, we would like to honour a special couple: Rita and John Blumanis. Sadly, we lost John last year but his legacy lives on. Rita and John supported Made financially to finish school when they learned that her family could not afford it. Lily Lane and Made are forever grateful for their support. Investing in women, like Made, does indeed accelerate progress! Go Made! Go Lily Lane!

Lily Lane on Tour Downunder! Made and Wayan detoured via Edenhope for some fabulous sausage rolls! Followed soon after by a visit to Dimboola - a visit to the Imaginarium and coffee by the Wimmera River. They loved seeing the ancient river red gums! Then it was time to head back to Melbourne - plenty of smoke still around from the bushfire! Final fun was attending the Sydney Road Street Party! A fabulous trip ended with the dynamic duo well rested and ready for another busy year at Lily Lane! They're so looking forward to welcoming you back! See you soon! 😎🥰🌴🍍🥥🍹

Lily Lane on Tour Downunder! From Horsham, our intrepid chauffeur, Wayan drove to Adelaide. A lovely family member, Ella offered her vacant two bedroom unit which of course, we immediately dubbed Villa Ella! Then we do love a market so we were off to Central Market and it didn't disappoint! A highlight of Adelaide! Then down to seaside Glenelg for fish & chips, and later discovered the fabulous Fringe Festival where we joined a choir in the park and then ventured out into the Barossa Valley wine country for Wayan to visit another family member into vintage motorbikes! Everyone so generous with their time and no bushfires! 🙏

Lily Lane on Tour Downunder! After a taste of the big city, Made & Wayan headed west via Ballarat to the Wimmera - super flat cropping country - end of summer, crops harvested, grain in silos or under big tarpaulins, so brown and dry! The opposite of Bali! And their first experience of bushfires - they dodged the Grampians fire and then the Ballarat district fire! And their first experience of 40 degree heat with a Catastrophic Fire Danger rating! 😧🍂🔥

Everyone loves their independence and this week we celebrated the 78th anniversary of Indonesian independence! From the late 1500s, the Dutch had gradually colonized this archipelago of 17,000 islands for the immense profits in the lucrative spice trade. Over 300 years later, Japan's World War II occupation dismantled much of the Dutch colonial state and economy. Following the Japanese surrender in August 1945, Indonesian nationalists declared independence in which they fought a bloody armed conflict to secure their freedom. The Netherlands formally recognized Indonesian sovereignty in 1949. That’s a lot to celebrate!

Heavens above, Lily Laners! It’s over too soon! The lavish temple festivals, devout prayers as well as the exquisite celebrations with closest friends and families, have come to a close! Yesterday was Kuningan Day which marks the end of the 10 day holiday. Balinese believe that this is the day when their ancestors return to heaven after visiting the earth during the ten days of Galungan celebrations. It has been another special time here - please know we'd love to have you join us and our wonderful staff! You know the trick to getting through life is to have a holiday booked! 🥳😎🕉

Ooh! What’s that lovely perfume? From early morning on Galungan Day this week, the smell of incense was heavy in the air! Everybody was in their formal Balinese attire to visit neighbours and relatives. Galungan is the ceremony which celebrates the victory of dharma over adharma (the triumph of good over evil). ‘Galungan’ comes from the Old Javanese language meaning 'win'. It marks the time when ancestral spirits of deceased relatives return to visit their former homes and all Balinese have a responsibility to be hospitable and welcoming to their past ancestors through prayers and offerings throughout their home. You can be sure that Wayan and Made had everything at Lily Lane looking fabulous! We just need you to join us ... soon please! 🥳🙏

Lily Lane is leading you up the garden path? Happily it's all true! Regulars guests know, when they walk across our private bridge over the river, past our organic vegetable garden, there is a 'secret' jungle path which takes you to some lovely shops and restaurants including the delights of Mesari Warung! Well good news, Lily Laners! Work is nearly finished on upgrading it to a concrete path to make your jalan jalan (walk) much easier! We look forward to seeing you soon strolling along our lovely, now longer, Lily Lane! 🚶‍♀️🚶🚶‍♀️🚶

It was Australian school holidays for a group of teacher mates who decided to run away to Lily Lane to escape the winter cold! And they didn't waste a minute ... religious ceremonies, market shopping, cooking class, offering class, dancers and birthday dinner in The Lily Pad dining room and community exercise class to burn off the calories! While they were here, we were pleased to see Indonesian President Jokowi visiting Australia - we hope he took a warm jacket!! Well done to the President and to our group - the friendship between Indonesia and Australia continues to strengthen! We are all looking forward to your return! 😎😍

It's been a huge day! This morning, we joined the whole village in a fabulous farewell for a revered elder village priest with a funeral procession and cremation. This was followed in the afternoon with a special babi guling (roast suckling pig) lunch for our staff - a show of appreciation for all their hard work. Thank you Lily Lane team - you're the best! We're so lucky to have each and every one of you! 🙏🙏🙏

After all the preparation and creative genius, the monsters were out last Tuesday night in fabulous parades through the streets of Bali. This religious ceremony is bigger and more lavish than any other in the year. The belief surrounding the island requires that after celebrations to kick off Nyepi, the island goes into hiding to protect itself from evil spirits by enveloping an atmosphere of a peaceful, deserted island ... an abandoned civilisation. Always amazing Bali! 🥰

Get ready, Lily Laners! Bali’s Day of Silence, is around the corner on Wed 22 March. It is celebrated like nowhere else on the planet. Our village is sculpting enormous papier-mâché monsters (called Ogoh-Ogoh) ready to join a procession. Balinese believe that evil spirits scour the earth looking for colonies to torment. So, the parades are designed to catch the attention of these evil spirits and draw them to the island. Then, by the time the evil spirits arrive, they find an island that’s seemingly deserted, with no sign of human life. Alas, these evil spirits depart, leaving the island cleansed and evil-free for another year ahead. Check out the Lily Lane monsters! Good things come in small packages! 🤩🤩

Heads up Lily Laners, Nyepi 2023 or Bali’s Day of Silence, is around the corner. It is the most magical and unique date on the Balinese calendar, found nowhere else in the world other than on this enchanting little island. This year, Nyepi falls on Wednesday 22 March. Right now, you can spot the young people of our village excitedly preparing and sculpting enormous papier-mâché monsters (called Ogoh-Ogoh) which, on the night before Nyepi, are paraded through the streets with loud music, bursts of fire and people lining the streets to add to the community spirit. Here’s an exclusive sneak peek of the fabulous monsters currently being built! Oh, and a puppy update!😮🧐🥳

The end of the Galungan ceremonies is here. The ancestral spirits have visited for the last 10 days, and yesterday, Kuningan is when they return. We think they would be well pleased with what they saw as we just had time to set up the Lily Lane Community Learning Centre with the recently donated desks & chairs! Fundraising has been a long process and we couldn't have done it without the support of many Lily Laners for which we and the local community are so very grateful! 🙏 Now we are gathering resources ... watch this space! Better still, come and visit! Help out! 2023 is shaping up to be a good year! 🙂

So many festivities: Christmas, New Year and now Galungan! What a fabulous time we’re all having! No sooner had we set off our fireworks, than Galungan arrived. And everyone agrees that Galungan is the most beautiful holiday in Bali! Streets become enormously rich with decorations and villagers wear colourful ceremonial clothes as they gather on the streets. The main street decoration for Galungan are Penjors – bamboo poles weighed down by offerings suspended at the end. The ancestors are visiting so family compounds are spruced up and come alive with devotions. Made and the team offer bountiful sacrifices of food and flowers to the ancestral spirits, expressing gratitude and hopes for protection. Come on 2023 – make it good one and make it your year to come to visit us!!

We all need R&R including hotel owner/managers, Made & Wayan. But first, it was of equal importance to thank the staff for the great service they provided to our recent Swedish yoga retreat guests! Then it was time to head for the hills for a break - cool mountain lakes, dramatic waterfalls, sublime scenery and for Wayan the challenge of mini-golf! Now they've returned refreshed and ready to welcome in the festive season with a new lot of lovely guests. Well done Lily Lane team! You care for yourselves so you can care for others in your own special style! Fantastic!😎😎
