According to the Lontar Sundarigama, the full moon (Purnama) occurring during this month, known as Purnama Kedasa, is regarded as the quintessence of full moons in other months. Purnama Kedasa pays homage to Sang Hyang Surya Amerta, the manifestation of the Supreme God in the form of enlivening energy residing in the sacred heavens, and has been revered since antiquity.
One of the prominent ceremonies in Bali during Sasih Kedasa is the Ida Bhatara Turun Kabeh ceremony at Pura Besakih in Karangasem Regency. The climax of this ceremony occurs precisely on the full moon day of Sasih Kedasa. During this ceremony, it is portrayed that all deities descend to the earthly realm to bestow their blessings upon humanity. On Wednesday, December 20th, Balinese celebrate the Pagerwesi Day, the one of the most significant ceremonies in Bali, particularly for the people in the northern Bali area. The name is derived from the words “Pager” (iron) and “Wesi” (fence), symbolizing self-protection against evil spirits.
Celebrated every 210 days, or once every six months according to the Balinese Calendar, Pagerwesi Day is dedicated to worshiping Sanghyang Paramesti Guru or God Siva. This deity is responsible for eliminating all negative and evil entities in the world, guiding people to lead their lives appropriately by avoiding undesirable behaviors and evil desires.

In line with the recent Palebonan, also known as Ngaben ceremony in Ubud, it is essential to clarify the significance of Ngaben for the Balinese people. Ngaben serves as a ritual of soul purification, wherein the deceased is cremated to facilitate their return to the divine realm. The fire used in the ceremony symbolizes the embodiment of Lord Brahma and is believed to cleanse the departed soul of impurities. The term “ngaben” also stems from “palebon,” derived from “lebu,” signifying “ash” in Balinese. Some interpret Ngaben as “ngabu,” meaning “to become ashes.” Therefore, Ngaben represents the transformation of the human body into ashes through cremation. According to Hindu beliefs in Bali, humans comprise a gross body (badan kasar), a subtle body (badan halus), and karma. The gross body is composed of the five elements known as Panca Maha Bhuta: pertiwi (solid), apah (liquid), teja (heat), bayu (wind), and akasa (void). These elements converge to form the human body, animated by the atma (soul). Upon death, only the gross body perishes, while the atma endures. Ngaben serves as the conduit for the release of the departed soul from earthly ties, facilitating its journey to the heavenly realm to await reincarnation. #ngaben #ubud #palebonan #ubudlife🌺
