About Full Moon in Bali

Purnama Kedasa

Not only is the island of Bali replete with breathtaking natural scenery, but it is also steeped in a rich cultural heritage. One of these is the celebration of Full Moon Day in Bali. Full moon celebrations are among the holidays that are determined by the sasih, or month. The Indian word "Purna," which translates to "perfect," is where we get our word "Purnama." As a result, the full moon festival takes place when the moon is in its full phase. This holiday is celebrated once every 15 days in each and every month, which means that during the course of a single year, Hindus have the opportunity to participate in the observance of a total of 12 different religious commemorations of holy days. On this most sacred day, Hindus pay homage to Sang Hyang Chandra, the god of brightness, in order to pray for a life that is flawless and unblemished.

The Kedasa full moon is the one that Hindus hold in the highest regard as being the most significant full moon day. On the day known as Purnama Kedasa, Sang Hyang Sunya Amerta is honoured for his role as the provider of the sacred water of life. The Kedasa Full Moon Day celebration is widely regarded as the most important of all full moon events that take place throughout the year. The majority of the time, Hindus will pray at the temple by bringing the necessary prayer facilities and infrastructure with them. The ancestors, who are revered and kept in the sanctum known as Kemulan, are typically the focus of worship when it comes to the deity Kedasa.

The Batara Turun Kabeh Ceremony is held at Pura Agung Besakih on the day of the full moon of Kedasa. This ceremony is significant because it is believed that during the ceremony, all of the gods unite and descend to earth in order to bestow their blessings upon their respective people. On the day of Kedasa's Full Moon, in addition to the Ceremony of the Batara Turun Kabeh, there are a great deal of other ceremonies or rituals that take place. Because Purnama Kedasa comes from the word "Kedas," which in Balinese means clean, it is also considered a day of melting all mental impurities (mala). As a result, during this holiday, Hindus are encouraged to pray in order to purify themselves on both a physical and spiritual level. In this way, they will be better able to steer clear of negative experiences and instead engage in constructive actions, words, and thoughts.

Interestingly in India bright neon powder covers revelers in northern India during the annual Hindu celebration called Holi, usually held in March. Known as the festival of colors, Holi is celebrated on the last full moon in the lunar month of Phalguna.

It is about to be ceremony central here in Bali, with so many auspicious days happening in close conjunction over the next three weeks.
It all starts on 28 February with Galungan, a celebration of good's victory over evil; followed by Kuningan 10 days later and immediately after that, the ceremonies leading up to Nyepi, Bali's day of silence (11 March) begin to unfold. Why are they happening in conjunction? Well Galungan and Kuningan follow the 210-day cycle of the Pawukon Calendar, whilst Nyepi marks the new day of the Saka Calendar (355 days).
