The film is a fictionalized account of the intense sporting rivalry and deep friendship between two world-renowned free divers, Jacques Mayol (played by Jean-Marc Barr) and Enzo Molinari (played by Jean Reno). The story follows them from their childhood in Greece to a high-stakes diving competition in Sicily. Jacques is portrayed as having an almost mystical connection to the ocean and dolphins, often feeling more at home underwater than on land.

Directed by Luc Besson, the film is celebrated for its stunning underwater cinematography and “Cinéma du look” aesthetic. Its atmosphere is heavily shaped by the haunting, electronic score composed by Éric Serra, which became one of the best-selling soundtrack albums in France.
