Most villas at Uluwatu Surf Villas are entered through hand-built Balinese candi bentar — split gateways inspired by traditional temple architecture found across the islands. Residence 28 at Uluwatu Surf Villas is centered around a reclaimed teak joglo from Java, reconstructed beam by beam on the Bukit. The hand-carved ceiling alone reflects generations of craftsmanship — every panel, joint, and detail shaped from old-growth teak and preserved as part of the home’s original structure.

Traditional Indonesian architecture meets clean contemporary lines, opening into the surrounding jungle through long timber corridors, oversized glass walls, and open living spaces designed for tropical living. Before becoming one of the world’s most respected surfboard shapers, Neal Purchase Jr. grew up around shaping bays, later carving his own path through graphic design, craftsmanship, and alternative board design.

Shot on location at Uluwatu Surf Villas, Episode 5 of HANDCRAFTED offers a closer look into Neal’s approach to shaping and surfing.

“I’d like to build boards well, and to last, and to have a real feel to them,” says Neal. “As a surfer-shaper you put all of your thoughts and feelings into that foam.”
