Built in 1876 Mount Falcon is the ancestral home of the Knox family who came to Ireland during the Cromwellian years. From 1932 - 1999 Major Robert and Constance Aldridge owned the estate opening the house in the mid 50's as a Hidden Ireland property and was one of the founding members of The Blue Book. The focus on food and service is as impotant today as it was in those days.

The finder reports:
You’re not going to Adam and Eve this...A new suggestion from an educated individual has been forwarded which has dumbfounded us...Might WTFossil be a dinosaur fossil?
There have been only two dinosaur fossils ever found on the island of Ireland and both of those came from the Co. Antrim area.
Now, incredulous as this may seem, the finder themselves reports a new, very recent find, which...wait for it, looks very much like the dinosaur head plate in the comparison photos. Are we right? Did the Moy drainage and river erosion finally break through the lava (basalt) flows which covered the island after the dinosaur lived here, thus now exposing our very, very ancient past? Your thoughts loyal Facebook and Instagram fans?

The Finder reports :

The Portuguese Archaeologist, who asked for high resolution photos , says preliminary impressions are that it appears to be bone !

He is very busy at the moment but watch this space for more to come.

WTFossil Update……

WTFossil and Bear Claw met today……

We think they are from the same Ancient beast The Bear. However WTFossil appears to be much older.

We have taken high resolution photos of Bear Claw and sent them to the same professionals, who very kindly offered suggestions, as WTFossil. We anxiously await their suggestions. Enjoy the roller coaster Bear Claw and good luck.

WTFossil still awaits news on it’s identity crisis however no news is good news…. Apparently.

For tonight’s episode of …….. WTFossil?

The finder reports:

A new Geologist has looked at high resolution photos of the
“fossil “ and suggested:

The item is brown country rock with cross cutting quartz veins / veinlets ( showing chilled margin ) I’d guess the shape has either been shaped ( by humans ) in the past or less likely eroded by water etc. it’s not a fossil I’d recognize.

An update from an archaeologist whose initial comments are contained in the first part of the story has added:

It may not be possible to be definitive without seeing it.

So we invite every Archaeologist , Anthropologist, Geologist and all the other ologist’s who live in or work in Mayo to please, please, please, come to Mount Falcon where the finder will make available the specimen for examination on presentation of their credentials.

Remember….. whatever it is…….it was found in The Moy Valley and it belongs in The Moy Valley and should be positively identified by our wealth of local talent. UP MAYO!

The Story so far……
A regular who stays and fishes with us here in Mount Falcon Country House Hotel found this “fossil“ on the River bed of Mount Falcon Fisheries and has told us the following:
An Anthropologist who studied it in person suggested:
It is from a mammal, not ruling out Hominid, but more likely Ancient Bear or Wolf fossil Typically between 7,000 – 40,000 year old.

A geologist suggests:
It’s a natural formation from the Ox mountains that due to rolling around in the river bed had eroded to this shape. It could therefore be 700 million years old.

A Local Mayo Archaeologist suggests:
That he can see where the Anthropologist sees bone and he thinks its Ancient Wolf.

An other Local Mayo Archaeologist suggests:
That it is definitely bone fossil but needs more investigation.

An other person with an Archaeology degree suggested:
It is from an ancient Otter.

If it is Ancient Bear, Wolf or Otter it is unique to Mayo. There is no documented fossils on these Ancient creatures in Mayo
If it Ancient Hominid – it might change the timeline of our understanding of habitation of our Island.
We are currently in discussion with the National Museum of Ireland - Natural History in Dublin for further identification.
