Lough Mardal Lodge

Lough Mardal Lodge Lakeside Eco Lodge with luxury Yurt & Shepherd's Hut glamping accommodation on the Wild Atlantic Way in South Donegal.

There is nothing quite like staying in a Yurt. A simple yet magical dwelling with wooden lattice walls and radial rafters, it evokes a sense of the exotic. Originally the homes of the nomads of Central Asia the Yurts at Lough Mardal Lodge have been adapted for today and have been chosen for their high-tech insulation, warmth and durability which is required for the occasionally temperamental weath

er on the West Coast of Ireland!

With 90 acres of land all our Yurts are well-spaced ensuring seclusion and privacy. Each is luxuriously furnished with a comfortable seating area and they are individually styled with sheepskins, woollen blankets, heavy 15 Tog duvets, fluffed pillows and crisp linen. All have beautiful views of lake, mountain and forestry. The Lodge is an eco building, built from strawbales with a grass roof, and is our communal amenity & social hub for glamping guests. It has a fully equipped self-catering kitchen, dining area, toilets and hot showers. Its main feature however is the striking Reciprocal Room, a large hang-out space with spiralling beams overhead, bathed in light offering panoramic views of lake, forestry and mountains. A peaceful spot to have a coffee and read a book, play cards, meet fellow travellers or plan the day's activities. It offers a warm refuge after a cross-country hike or after a busy day's adventure. Located 20 minutes from Donegal Town, on the Wild Atlantic Way, the site at Lough Mardal is a veritable Middle Earth of varying landscapes from lush wildflower meadows and glistening lake shorelines, to vast expanses of soft mossy bogland, to rough heather-covered hills with sweeping panoramic views of Donegal Bay and its neighbouring mountain ranges. Spread across 90 acres it is beautiful, wild and unspoilt with two lakes - Lough Acully and the larger Lough Mardal. The setting is secluded, dramatic and beautiful. Listed in the Irish Independent's Fab 50 Places to Stay in Ireland, 2020. "Few places do it better", The Irish Examiner

Big thanks to our neighbour Mark for the steady hands and serious skill in the ancient craft of hedgelaying...over 300m laid so far in the last few weeks.

The tradition of hedgelaying developed in the 16th century as a way to contain livestock. It involves severing the stems of trees and bending them at an angle, weaving them together so they are intertwined to create a dense living barrier. Lovely to look at and they also provide a wildlife corridor for birds, animals and pollinators. 🐝 Always a good thing. 🐦
