* Derry loves its many sporting heroes and here we share an image is of the forgotten great athlete, Anton Hegarty, medal winner in the 1920 Antwerp Olympics. Anton won silver medal in the cross country team event. He was one of a family of 12, born in 1892 in Nailors Row.

Escaping unemployment, he joined the army in 1911 and his running skills meant he was a messenger runner at Gallipoli. He suffered shell shock and a bullet wound but his athletic career peaked at the 1920 Olympics, where he met some legendary sportsmen. Anton died in a road accident in 1944. Although possibly Derry’s first Olympian and medalist, he is little recognised.

His amazing life is told in Malcolm McCausland’s book, ‘Lion for a Day’. Who knows of Anton and of any relatives in Derry? Do share in the comments. Thanks to Joseph Keys for sharing this image.
