We were thrilled to welcome Michael Kiernan to Monks this week who spotted himself on the wall! Twice.

Michael was a key member of Ireland’s 1982 Triple Crown winning team and their 1985 Triple Crown winning team.
His most famous moment came in March 1985, when he kicked a decisive drop goal against England at Lansdowne Road to secure Ireland’s 13–10 victory and the Triple Crown.

He also earned 43 caps for Ireland and toured New Zealand with the British and Irish Lions in 1983. A genuine Irish rugby legend! And… he also spotted his Uncle Mick Lane in another shot from 1948. So much history.

Monks is in the new edition of Burren Dinners.

Trevis L. Gleason’s book gathers the best of hospitality and food producers of the Burren and the dinners they cook at home for friends and family. The new edition includes our own Katelin Vaughan and her story.

Katelin started with us as a teenager, waiting tables. She now looks after the team here, including the ones just starting out.

Thank you to Trevis for having us in the book, Jarlath for your help and well done Katelin.

From all the team at Monks

As the evenings get darker and a sense of calm descends on the village, we will be reducing our evening opening hours mid-week for our last orders for food. We look forward to seeing you by the fireside in Monks soon 👌

We are honoured to have won this lovely award from Georgina Campbell's Guides Here’s what Georgina had to say…

“In Ballyvaughan, where the Burren meets Galway Bay, this much-loved bar and restaurant with rooms can offer something no conventional hotel can quite reproduce: the feeling of being at the centre of village life while having one of Ireland’s most extraordinary landscapes just outside the door. Monks has long been part of that experience. Its waterside setting gives the immediate appeal, but the real attraction is the combination of lively hospitality, comfortable accommodation and food with a sense of immediacy that reflects the coastal location. Seafood is naturally a strong suit in this part of Clare, and a relaxed meal after a day exploring the Burren, walking the coast or exploring the Wild Atlantic Way is exactly the kind of uncomplicated pleasure that visitors remember. The best pubs with rooms work because the two sides of the business complement each other perfectly. Residents have an atmospheric place to eat and drink without going anywhere, while the bar gains the easy mixture of locals and travellers that creates genuine character; and the village itself becomes part of the stay. Monks embodies that sense of connection very well, and it would be a good template for many towns and villages around Ireland. Friendly, informal and wonderfully placed for discovering north Clare, it offers a memorable small-stay experience with a strong sense of place, making it a very worthy Pub with Rooms winner.”

While we might not be delighted to see the rain… There’s something about that first burst of sunshine afterwards 🌈

The clouds clear, the light hits Ballyvaughan Bay and suddenly everything feels a little brighter.

And sometimes, if you’re lucky, the rainbow lands right on Monks. We’ll take that as a good sign. Thanks to our wonderful visitor Sarah for sharing this amazing shot with us.
