We were so honoured to welcome Norma back to Wild Hideaways and her words say it better than we ever could:

“Another fabulous weekend at Wild Hideaways. From the freshly baked scones on arrival, the dinner and breakfast hampers and the comfiest beds with a view looking straight out to Bantry Bay from the beds. The silence and total switch off from life’s rushing & racing was food for the soul. I had a beautiful facial in the Spa with Karen on Saturday evening, which resulted in the best sleep I’ve had in months! And Amy and John’s subtle presence on site always with a warm smile or little texts, means you know you have somebody nearby if needed.”

Older than the season 🌙🍂

There’s something quietly special about the Winter Solstice.

The longest night.

The deepest dark.

And then, almost imperceptibly, the light begins to return.

For thousands of years, people have marked this moment. At Newgrange, the midwinter sun still reaches into a chamber built more than 5,000 years ago. Here in West Cork, Kealkill Stone Circle carries its own ancient magic in the hills.

Maybe that’s part of why this time of year still feels different.

A little slower.

A little more still.

A little closer to something ancient.

And December doesn’t have to look the same for everyone.🤍

West Cork doesn’t quieten in autumn and winter. It changes character.🍂🌙

Autumn and winter in West Cork have a drama all of their own.

The greens deepen into browns, rusts and purples. The hills become moodier, the air sharper and the landscape seems to pull everything closer.
And as the days darken, the sky comes alive.
Stars begin to fill the night. Planets appear above the hills. The Milky Way stretches overhead and the moon can seem impossibly low, almost resting on the landscape.

October is written in the stars 🌙

There is something about October nights that feels a little more magical.🍂

The evenings grow darker, the air sharpens and suddenly we find ourselves looking up a little more often.

At Wild Hideaways, darkness is never something to rush through. It is part of the experience. A chance to slow down, notice more and reconnect with the wildness around us.🌾

Sometimes all it takes is the sky, a little stillness and the feeling that there is something much older than us unfolding overhead.

Some skies are beautiful.
Some feel almost enchanted.🌙

Celestial events always carry a little magic, but there is something about watching them unfold from the hills at Wild Hideaways that feels different.

Perhaps it’s the height and the stillness.

Perhaps it’s being surrounded by ancient bogland and landscapes that have held stories for thousands of years.🌾

Perhaps it’s the nearby stone circles, standing quietly beneath the same moon and stars long before us.

Or perhaps it’s simply that, here, darkness is something we protect and celebrate.🌻
