King House, Boyle. Then and Now, 1988 v 2018. These photos were taken 30 years apart and they show what an extraordinary transformation has occurred at King House. This building was to be knocked to build a car-park but Roscommon Co. Council instead embarked on a remarkable restoration project that began in 1989, the result speaks for itself. They tried to salvage as much of the existing fixtures and fittings as possible and it is amazing to think that the front door shown in the upper photo is the same front door that is there today (door is open in lower photo so is out of view). The fanlights and side windows were revealed when the ivy and plasterwork was peeled back during restoration works. King House is well worth a visit, see: http://www.kinghouse.ie/

Very interesting document from 1852 showing all the landed estates in the county of Roscommon at that time, there were 251!!! This document was put together by Fitstephen French, MP, of Erritt Lodge, brother of Lord de Freyne of Frenchpark. Most of the estates named had a house within the estate, although some were absentee landlords and some along the Roscommon border were resident in the neighbouring counties. I had estimated, from mapping and other sources, that there were around 130 'Big Houses' in the county, this increases that estimate considerably.
