The Almanage enjoys a historical connection with Cahir Castle. The land upon which The Almanage is built was donated by George Ponsonby, Viscount of Lismore, who was the son of Lady Eleanor Butler, daughter of John Butler, the 17th Earl of Ormond. The Butlers occupied Cahir Castle for nearly 600 years.

How did we come about our name? The Almanage comes from alma – meaning soul, nourishment, and knowledge – and hermitage, a quiet place of retreat. The two tie together all that we stand for and want to create here.
