Today, on Bloomsday, we celebrate Ireland’s extraordinary literary heritage and the writers, poets, playwrights and storytellers who continue to inspire us.

Bloomsday marks the annual celebration of James Joyce and his masterpiece Ulysses, a novel set over a single day in Dublin on 16th June 1904. It is a day that honors not only Joyce’s work but Ireland’s enduring love of literature, storytelling and the written word.

At The Lansdowne, a love of literature and storytelling is woven into the fabric of the house. Guests will find books tucked into quiet corners, reading nooks designed for lingering a little longer, and tributes throughout the hotel to one of Ireland’s greatest playwrights, John B. Keane.

From original productions of *Sive* to artwork and memorabilia celebrating his life and work, his legacy forms part of the character and atmosphere of The Lansdowne.

Bloomsday is a reminder of the enduring power of words, stories and imagination, and of the special place literature holds in Irish culture.

That spirit of storytelling remains alive today through our monthly Poet’s Shout, held on the first Tuesday of every month in our Poet’s Lounge. An open mic evening where poet’s, writers, musicians and storytellers gather and share their work, it’s a celebration of creativity, community and the power of words orange heart 🧡

Summer Solstice Comes to Kenmare ☀️

We are genuinely excited to see Kenmare hosting its very first Summer Solstice Festival this year.

The Summer Solstice has always held a special place in my heart. Growing up at the foot of the Hill of Tara, the longest day of the year was celebrated with music, storytelling, feasting, dancing, fires and community gatherings. It was a time to come together, to celebrate nature, light and the season ahead.

Years later, we carried some of those traditions to Cahore by the sea, where people would gather before dawn for a sunrise swim and welcome the day together.

To now see a full community celebration taking place here in Kenmare feels incredibly special.

From sunrise yoga and spiritual walks to music, dancing, crafts, storytelling and an evening concert, the programme captures everything that the solstice is about: connection, culture, creativity and community.

As this year’s Summer Solstice also falls on Father’s Day, it is the perfect opportunity to spend time with family and friends while enjoying everything our wonderful town has to offer.

If you are planning to join the sunrise or sunset events, wrap up warm, bring a blanket, a flask and a few creature comforts. The dawn and evening air can still be quite fresh, but that is all part of the experience!

A huge well done to Lynne and everyone involved in organising this inaugural festival. I cannot wait to take part and I hope many of you will too.
