Calls for a notorious Galway hotel to come under local authority control and demolished have raised wider concerns among councillors about how similar properties will be treated.

The Shannon Oaks Hotel in Portumna has remained closed for 15 years, with Galway County councillors now calling for it to be deemed derelict and acquired through a compulsory purchase order.

Galway County Councillor Jimmy McClearn tabled a motion at the council’s March meeting regarding the hotel, citing the absence of any refurbishment plans from its owners.

‘They can afford to make the site safe’

Nearly 15 years since a fire destroyed the Shannon Oaks hotel in Portumna, Co Galway, the future of the building is still uncertain and it is not known when, or if, the long-expected refurbishment will take place.

It has been over a decade since the Comer Group acquired the building on St Joseph's Road. However, the site still lies empty, with questions over its safety being regularly brought up by residents and local politicians.

Built in the mid-90s, the hotel was a landmark in Portumna and Galway, with events and weddings bringing colour and footfall to the East Galway town.

Locals still fondly remember the hotel as the “focal point, the life, and heart of the community as well as from a tourism perspective,” hoping that one day it could be brought back to its former glory.

Raising the matter in the Dáil, local TD Louis O' Hara said he's sick of the excuses and can-kicking associated with the site.

The matter is still with the Ombudsman but it made Galway County Council actually reply to him and put the Shannon Oaks on the their agenda.

Check out the saga here & the reply from Galway County Council here and what they deemed being done by the owners Comer Homes Group to take it of the Derelict Sites list!!

The site is Derelict until the Hotel is reopened.
