A temperature of 28.6 degrees was recorded at Shannon Airport on Monday, provisionally breaking the record for the highest temperature ever documented in the month of May by Met Éireann.

Ireland’s previous record of 28.4 degrees had been set at Ardfert in Co Kerry in 1997.

A spokesperson for Met Éireann said that the record being broken again on Tuesday is “not out of the question”, with the forecast generally ranging between 20 and 28 degrees, but possibly stretching to the 29 degree mark in parts of the country.

On the 17th of May, we mark the 50th anniversary of one of the most extraordinary voyages in modern history. ⚓

In 1976, explorer Tim Severin set sail from Ireland in a traditional leather boat, retracing the legendary journey of St. Brendan the Navigator, and demonstrating that Irish monks may have reached North America nearly 1,000 years before Columbus.

The expedition took over a year, but it reshaped our understanding of early exploration. And the very boat that made it possible, the Brendan Boat, is now on display at Craggaunowen.

But this was only one chapter in Severin’s remarkable career. He went on to recreate the voyages of Sindbad, Jason and the Argonauts, and even journeyed across the Pacific on a bamboo raft! All to test whether ancient legends could have been real!
