Portree Guesthouse - Waterford

That's all folks....
On Monday just gone, myself and the rest of the team all handed over our keys to Portree and called it a day, 8 years on from it all having started. Its been a brilliant, hugely enjoyable experience from start to finish. We've all met so many fantastic people over the years, had our share of serious nights of craic, and through the highs and lows its been a completely unforgettable experience end to end.

Thanks a million to all the many many guests, helpers and staff that I've had the absolute privilege to meet over this time. There have been too many people to mention that I owe a huge debt of gratitude to for making my time in Waterford such an exceptional one and for making Portree such an awesome place to spend time. How we managed to almost always find the right people and be lucky enough for them to stay, in most cases for years, has been the bit of luck that any business would kill for. I feel so fortunate to have worked with people that always felt more like friends and family than staff or colleagues. Having started the business with no experience, training, contacts or idea, the staff have been the ones to pull the whole thing along. The winding up this week has felt more like a family breakup than a business deal and has been tinged with a lot of sadness.

It was more than a little disconcerting handing over the keys and walking out the door for the last time (only to check my pockets for my keys 2 minutes later). It feels like a limb lost - I'm already missing the place and won't forget the amazing time I had and the amazing people I met over the past 8 years. Thanks to the most recent team - Mario, Kristijan, Mary, Zorana, Milenko, Camilla and helpers Lisa & Natasha who stuck out a stressful and uncertain past couple of months. And all the prior teams and helpers who put up with whatever was thrown at them and kept the show on the road. I know it's not the last I'll hear of many of you and want to wish everyone the best and send out a massive thank you to everyone whose path I've crossed over these years - guests, staff and helpers.

3rd Highest Ranked Hostel in Ireland!!
And all it took was for us to close our dorms. Only the Black Sheep in Killarney and The Hideout in Di**le ahead of us, so fingers cross Jackie Healy Ray gets on board for a Kerrexit taking Kerry independent so we can finally top the poll.

We're a bit depressed about the latest round of restrictions but there's lots to do around Waterford way that isn't impacted. Not least Winterval with it's many food stalls and events. But the old reliable is still worth a trip particularly these last couple of mild days.

Christmas lands today with the launch of Winterval. The big wheel is already full spin, there's petsival tomorrow and Sunday for all the dog lovers out there. Live music in the Apple Market on Sunday. And more food and drink than you can shake a stick at.

7 Years in Business!! Whoop!
We celebrated a couple of weeks ago with an end of
summer barbecue, with Malin, Ruzica and Viktorija
finishing up for the season. Thanks everyone. A busy
year in the end despite everything and was great to

It's not for us to comment on anyone's appearance but it's evident around Portree today that peoples' sunscreen budget has been slashed this year. We've had real scorchers all week- Tramore has been wedged with people now that the amusements are back open. Even our garden had it's part to play in burning the bejaysus out of a few unbothered guests today.

We've a car park full of Northern Irish cars with a right few Northern visitors, presumably down to escape the week of the 12th.

Where is this Summer going. Almost half way already. With indoor dining most likely beginning in 2 weeks you'd best get cracking if you want to get away for the summer!
