Wilton Castle has long and varied history and it is associated with some of County Wexford’s most esteemed families including the De Denes, Furlongs, Butlers and Alcocks. In its earliest days it was the centre of a large medieval manor that was referred to as Kayer. This manor or barony covered much of the modern parishes of Bree, Davidstown and Glynn and was referred to variously as Kayer, Keir, Kyre, and Caher.

A few years ago we received an email from a lady in Rio De Janerio who found pictures of this "mystery castle" in an album which had been in her family for generations. After some research she was able to source the name of the castle and get in contact with us. There were no dates on the photographs but we imagine they were taken in late 1800s/ early 1900s.

🌟Did you know? 🌟Wilton Castle was originally built as a manor house (Which you can see to the left of this photo) It remained like that until 1837 when Harry Alcock decided to change the outward exterior of the house into the castle we see today.

Wishing a Happy Easter to all our visitors and friends.

In link with this weekend's 1916 celebrations some of you might be interested in this documentary film - Out of Ireland.

Out Of Ireland was filmed in part at Wilton 23 years ago. It was written and directed by husband and wife Paul Wagner and Ellen Casey Wagner. It was narrated by Kelly McGillis featuring voice-overs from Liam Neeson , Gabriel Byrne and Brenda Fricker to name a few.

The film tells the story of Irish Emigration in the 18th, 19th and 20th Centuries. The film also features our local Vinegar Hill and stories from the 1798 rebellion and the 1916 rising.
