This Week Today
Current Events from Israel
The annual Israel Day Parade was held this past week in New York City. For the first time in the last 60 years, the Mayor, citing his past strong and consistent support for terrorism against Jews, refused to participate. Instead he attended an anti-Israel event with Jill Jacobs, who is famous for her likeness being used in the scene in which the Godfather successfully scares the movie producer in Hollywood while he’s sleeping in his bed. Seemingly because of the Mayor’s absence, attendance was stellar at the parade and included very right-wing members of the current Israeli Government, like Betzalel Smotrich, Amichai Eliyahu and Yitzchak Wasserlauf. This is kind of how things are going these days: The abandonment of Israel/the Jews by a large segment of the left has opened the door to the entire right. In that sense, these leftists are something of unintentional heroes. Funny sometimes how G-d runs the world.
Speaking of running the world, President Trump sometimes seems to think he does that. This week there was apparently a contentious phone call between Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu concerning planned Israeli attacks in Lebanon’s capital of Beirut. Similar to many a red-headed girlfriend, President Trump is often tons of fun, but also at times displays some pretty unhinged behavior. The Israeli left celebrated this incident, but President Trump quickly downplayed it and Israel continued to bomb the heck out of southern Lebanon. More on that now.
Lebanon
In a momentous accomplishment, after crossing the Litani River, Israeli forces conquered the legendary Beaufort castle fortress. Both the Israeli and Golani Brigade flags were subsequently flown above the site. Some Israeli leftist made a movie about this place after Israel retreated from it and the rest of Lebanon 25 years ago. That move has gone great by the way. The film portrayed Israel to be so weak that it was rewarded with a nomination for an Academy Award. It didn’t win and now it will no longer be able to inspire Israel’s enemies. A different kind of Israel conquered the place this time, not nearly as accommodating as the previous one. After messing around, everyone is certainly finding out now.
After suffering tons of losses, Hezbollah decided to target northern Israeli communities with rocket fire and drones. Israel planned to respond by taking out Hezbollah targets in southern Beirut, until President Trump reportedly demanded that those plans be aborted. Despite Israel’s seeming acquiescence to the “request” by the American President, the bombing of terrorist sites throughout southern Lebanon intensified, including in larger former cities like Tzur (Tyre) and Nabatieh. Anti-Israeli media is howling about these specific targets as their capture/destruction will virtually spell the end of Hezbollah’s presence near the previous Israeli border. There are likely terrorists still in the area, but they will be effectively trapped very soon.
Hezbollah continues to attack Israeli forces with fiber optic drones that make warning and jamming nearly impossible. More Israeli soldiers were tragically killed and wounded this week, including a combat doctor (killed) and an infantry battalion commander (wounded). In short, Hezbollah is getting some lucky shots in, but it is completely incapable of stopping the Israeli offensive. Only President Trump seems to be able to do that.
But why would he do that? Seemingly the answer is the possible disruption these attacks could cause to the never ending ongoing negotiations between the US and Iran. There continues to be a ceasefire between the two sides that includes an awful lot of shooting at each other. After a US drone was targeted by Iran this week, the US then targeted Iran and then Iran struck both Bahrain and Kuwait, then the US assassinated a pro-Iranian leader in Iraq. One heck of a ceasefire, definitely worth preserving…
Gaza
Israel continued this week to take out Hamas terrorists in Gaza, including those who were heavily involved in the atrocities of Oct. 7th. One of those eliminated this week personally participated in the kidnapping of Israeli hostages. Without the hostages, Hamas seems completely incapable of preventing the assassinations. However, they also completely refuse to disarm, as demanded by the ceasefire agreement. Prime Minister Netanyahu has been threatening to conquer another 10% of Gaza that would bring Israeli control to 70% of the area that was previously under Hamas control. Hasn’t happened yet, but it almost sounds better to my ears than Eric Church at the UNC Commencement this year.
Judea and Samaria
Judea and Samaria continue to be a world unto itself since Oct. 7th. Israeli victories proliferate by the day. Although there was a terrorist attack this week at the Gush Etzion junction (4 wounded, terrorist eliminated), terrorism continues to be mostly suppressed. Meanwhile, Israel is making moves. Over 2000 new residential units were advanced through the planning stages this week, including a new neighborhood for Kiryat Arba/Hevron - their third new neighborhood in the last year. Exclusive: More coming in the near future!
Also this week, the Government approved the expropriation of land around the historic “Herodion” site in eastern Gush Etzion. Now the area will be much more accessible, preserved and developed. This is a big blow to extensive Arab efforts to prevent all this from happening in the past.
In the Old City of Jerusalem, another property was purchased and redeemed through the Ateret Cohanim organization this week. The move contributes to the significant strengthening of the Jewish Presence in the highly historic and strategic area. Exclusive: More to come there as well!
New Mossad Chief
The Israeli Supreme Court approved the appointment of a new head of the Mossad - Major General Roman Grofman. He was previously appointed by the democratically elected Prime Minister but for some reason needs the approval of the non-democratically elected Supreme Court. These are the same folks who have now required the Government to allow representatives of the Red Cross to visit imprisoned terrorists and fomented national social unrest by invalidating laws concerning the IDF draft.
They and their leftist allies have caused a good amount of domestic drama leading up to the upcoming national elections. In the meantime, we’ll see how much this Coalition can accomplish in the months remaining. After that, who knows what will be.
