he Aravalli Mountains were formed about 2000 million years ago in two mountain building events (called orogeny) - the Aravalli orogeny (early Proterozoic; 2000 mya) and the Delhi orogeny (middle Proterozoic; 1500 mya). They were believed to be almost as tall or even taller than the Himalayas are currently. The Aravallis have been eroded away over the course of geological time due to the tectonic and surface processes that occur on Earth and have been reduced to their present height.

The Himalayas, on the other hand, are extremely young in geological terms. They were formed when the Eurasian plate collided with the Indo-Australian plate about 70–50 million years ago. The mountains are still increasing in height as the Indo-Australian plate is going below (a process called subduction) the Eurasian plate. However, the same processes of erosion and weathering act on the Himalayas as they did on the Aravallis and balance out the increase in height maintaining it almost constant.

Aravalli, being the old fold mountains, have stopped growing higher due to the cessation of upward thrust caused by the stopping of movement of the tectonic plates in the Earth’s crust below them.
