The concept of a verandah is very colonial and harks back to the days of the Raj. When there was no air conditioning this was the space used during the days with breeze blowing through the open spaces and yet being sheltered from the scorching sunlight. Use of ‘Taantis’ was prevalent at the time. They were made with intertwined dried Khus (Vetiver) which was hanged in the open window space in the verandah with a pipe running on top with drip holes. It was the air conditioning of the time. Apart from cooling down the space, the fragrance from the khus would make the whole house smell fresh and fragrant.
