There is a ridge in Kumaon where a hundred-year-old house has been sitting quietly, waiting.

The slate roof has held monsoons and snowfall and the kind of silence that cities have forgotten. Below it, clouds settle into the valley each evening. Above it, the Himalayas arrive on clear mornings without announcement.

The rhododendrons are in bloom right now. The birds arrive before breakfast. The library has no closing time. The nights here are full of stars.

If you have been postponing that long holiday; you already know where this is.

Five days. One ridge. A circle that will not easily forget.

Burānsh - a Nada Yoga and Dhrupad sound healing retreat at Kot Kailash Kumaon; concluded this April. What began as a programme became something none of us had words for by the final evening.

Burānsh will return. If you feel called, you know where to find us.

Spinach. Picked this morning. Twenty steps from the kitchen.

At Tehni, the menu begins in the garden. What the season offers, Chandan cooks. What the garden doesn't have today, the table doesn't carry. Nothing travels far. Nothing needs to.

This is not a concept. This is simply how things work at 7,800 feet in Shaukiyathal.

Burānsh season, Kumaon.

The rhododendron forests of the central Himalaya bloom for exactly this window; late March into April, at 7,500 feet, in air that registers 12 on the AQI.

Kot Kailash sits inside Shaukiyathal, Almora - Jageshwar - a real forest reserve. The wildlife here is not managed. The silence is not designed. The bloom outside the door asks nothing of you.

Nine rooms. One of the last places in the Kumaon Hills where the forest still sets the terms.

Some sounds don't enter through the ears. They arrive somewhere deeper.

Below the thoughts.
Below the week you've been carrying.
Below everything the city built around you.

This is Raag Tilak Kamod.

Rashi on the tanpura. Unedited. Unfiltered. Exactly as it sounds in a room when she begins.

Close your eyes.
Listen again.
Notice what moves.
This April, this voice meets the silence of the Kumaon Himalayas. Rhododendrons forest. Mountain air. Seven thousand eight hundred feet
above the noise.

Four days. Eight people.
The last few places in the Circle.

Some places slow time down.

At 7,800 feet on a Kumaoni ridge, the air is clean enough to taste. The Nanda Devi range fills the horizon. The kitchen follows the harvest. And our four legged buddies — our most dependable host — they are always at the gate.

Eight hours from Delhi by road. Direct trains to Kathgodam. Flights to Pantnagar and Bareilly — we take care of everything from there.

The ridge has its own residents.

Long before the guests arrive and long after they leave, Shaukiyathal belongs to them.

Over 200 bird species have been recorded in our neighbourhood. Not in a sanctuary behind a gate. Not on a guided tour. Just outside your window, on the wire above the path, in the rhododendron tree by the courtyard.

This is not managed wildlife. This is the real thing.

This is Pooran.

He is from Kunja Gunth — the village that Kot Kailash calls home. He did not come to us with a hotel management degree or years of five-star experience. He came to us looking for something that every person deserves but not every workplace offers. Dignity. And mutual respect.

We hired him. We are training him. He looks after our guests at the front of the house, takes care of their rooms, and walks them through the trails and forests of Shaukiyathal — the land he has known his entire life. Is he still learning? Yes. Aren't we all.

But here is what we know already: Pooran shows up every day with his whole heart. And at Kot Kailash, that is the only qualification that has ever mattered most.

We are a small business with a large ambition — to one day be counted among the finest hospitality companies in the world. We believe that journey begins not with the rooms we build or the views we offer, but with how we treat the people who make this place what it is.

Pooran is why we believe that.

This is Chandan.

He came up through The Kumaon, Kasar Devi — the same property where Pushkar served as founding General Manager. When Kot Kailash was born, Chandan came with it.

He knows which trail has the best views at dawn.
He knows which guests need chai before they ask for it. He knows when the oak forest smells different before the rain.

Kumaon Hills celebrated Holi. And Chandan celebrated the loudest of all.

This is what it looks like when people love where they work.

Happy Holi from 7,800 feet. 🔴

On Holi morning, the lovely ladies of Shaukiyathal came to Kot Kailash.

Not as guests. Not as staff.

As neighbours. As the village that this place belongs to.

They brought colour, laughter, and blessings — the kind that no booking platform can arrange and no marketing budget can manufacture.

When you stay at Kot Kailash, you are not visiting a property. You are being welcomed into a community that has stood on this ridge for generations.

This is their home. We are simply fortunate to be part of it.

Happy Holi from Shaukiyathal.
