cornice :is an overhanging edge of snow on a ridge or the crest of a mountain.
It looks like a wave of snow frozen just as it is about to break. Cornices are formed by strong winds blowing snow over a sharp terrain edge, where it accumulates and eventually projects horizontally out over a drop-off.
Why Cornices are Dangerous
Cornices are widely considered one of the most deceptive hazards in mountaineering for several reasons:
* Invisible Weakness: From the windward side (the side you typically walk up), a cornice looks like a smooth continuation of the slope. It is often impossible to tell where solid ground ends and the overhanging snow begins.
* Collapse Risk: If a climber walks out onto the overhang, their weight can cause the cornice to fracture and collapse. This often triggers an avalanche on the slope below.
* Cornice Falls: The fracture line (where the snow breaks) can sometimes occur surprisingly far back on the "safe" solid ground, not just at the edge of the overhang.
Safety Measures
* Stay Back: Mountaineers usually stay well back from the edge of a ridge, aiming to walk on the "scarp" or windward side.
* Probing: In poor visibility, climbers may use an ice axe or probe to check for solid ground beneath the snow.
