Farm to table : Nutmeg

We have had this nutmeg plant for a 6yrs or so. It did fruit last year but maybe we weren’t around when it popped !

Yes - this fruit pops when it is ripe and ready. What a glorious inner cover in red - I just fell in love with it.

So now we have nutmeg that will make its way to the breakfast experience.

And the fruit will be made into a chutney - just discovered that Malayalees make this to be eaten as an accompaniment to rice.

Morning travails

The champa in the courtyard is blooming. And sheds flowers on the green grass.

The mission this morning was to arrange these flowers on a tennis racquet. 🎾🏸🌸

Surrounded by nature kids create their own version of play. And if they are taught to enjoy their own company - you don’t need no baby sitters or nannies. Nature does that job beautifully. ❤️

This is the mystery that warms the cockles of our heart

The Brahminy Kite - a massive raptor which is very shy of the humans.

When we were building , we used to see it on the Fernandes mango tree. Most of the times fighting with the crow.

Over a period of time, it got comfortable to come near the edge of the infinity pool to drink some water during the summer months.

Now it has got comfortable to come near the house area of the pool. And now we find that it is happy to sit on the chair surveying the surroundings.

It is the part that I love about what we have created. Animals, birds, butterflies, moths etc etc - all coexisting happily with the humans.

Some mornings are magical.

Magical - because they are slow, catching small details that you tend to miss in your busy daily life.

Someone can argue that the sun rays bordering the clouds is magical. And that it doesn’t happen daily. Maybe “. But when you catch something magical from the morning rays - it is bliss.

And then the little details of the flowers of the touch-me-not (am obsessed with them currently), the red ant nest made of leaves (oldest textile weavers ?), the other flowers etc. And ending with a gorgeous bowl of overnight oats with a lot of goodies.

Nothing can beat the joys in these little things with easy companionship.

Table getting ready for the breakfast experience

Mornings are always special and the guests and we look forward to the languid breakfast.

In the spirit of mindfulness and slow living - the table is set with flowers picked from the gardens, each layer of the table gets added basis the time that the guests want to eat.

I love this morning process and it is a joy to see it all coming together in silence.

Hope the guests do enjoy the breakfast today. Today is the speciality - my version of the Middle Eastern dish Shakshouka.

Stoked to part of this list of 100 most beautiful homestays in India by (Condenast Traveller India).

What resonated was what Zara Dmello writes - ‘Some of the most rewarding trips begin instead at a family dining table, over second helpings of breakfast and a host who insists that you take the longer, prettier route to the market.’

So glad that some of this and more resonates with the guests whom we have had the privilege to host . We are because of them ❤️

: Jackfruit

We used to have two jackfruit trees when we bought the land. Only one survives. The other one fell during the hurricane Tautake.

This tree is also next to the pottery studio. Currently it is laden with fruit. This is the first one that we plucked this year.

Which I promptly converted to a delightful Jackfruit biryani (made Kerala style with jeeraga samba rice and my special biryani masala). I discovered jackfruit biryani courtesy at our dear friend Piyush’s house in Bombay.

Though non vegetarians will say that there is nothing called veg biryani - I agree to disagree here 🤣. I feel this biryani and the veg one that I make for myself is totally slay (Gen Alpha language courtesy one that I raise 🤣).

We don’t do lunch or dinner service . But wondering if there will be takers for this biryani for breakfast ? 😃

Rarely do we talk about the pool .

Maybe it gets de-proritised because of the nature surrounding us. The birds, the plants, the greens and the produce tend to take centre stage.

Tho I must confess that the pool is integral to the experience. Surrounded by the tilting palms, staring into the fields and hills and having a vantage point to see the sunrise from the infinity end.

An additional plus is that a third of the pool is in the shade - giving you joy even during the hot summer months.
