Precious cargo for a dear friend. Produce of and made Parijaat Goa BnB

What does precious mean ?

Different things for different people I think.

And it does evolve over time. Maybe when we are kids, precious was the time we played. As we became older - precious evolved to money, jewels, and maybe rare moments of peace in a busy life.

Today precious has a whole new meaning. And our time Parijaat Goa BnB has only made it clearer for us. Nature’s bounty, fresh produce from the gardens, understanding our heritage, learning new skills without a goal, failing, seeing things which we didn’t see even tho they were in front of us. And maybe so much more.

Who thought I will make pickles or jam ! But I do and very proudly. Some taste fab and some not so much. But it is ok - because it is a labour of love - of the tree and my hands.

A small part of this labour of love (bimbli pickle, karvanda pickle and traditional goan mango jam) on its way to a dear friends home. Who appreciates this more than the jewels !

In loving memory of Raju.

Our only guest who was allowed to throw on my wheel even when I was away. His full belly laughter, cheer, optimism and humility - we remember him for all this and more.

It has taken us a while to process this because we are still grappling with the fact that he is no more with us.

I saw his son Kartik Dengle wishing him what would have been his baba’s 70th birthday.

Here is Parijaat Goa BnB thinking of him and his absolutely lovely family. We do feel the family’s loss at a very personal level.

Raju lives Parijaat Goa BnB in the form of this vase that he made in my ceramic studio. He left it for me to fire and glaze as I wanted in the many hues that I like. This vase adorns the large dining area and is a part of the breakfast experience for our guests. Always adorned with flowers.

In loving memory of Raju. He is deeply missed.

All the way from Parijaat Goa BnB to Kerala

My grandmother loved plants. I think Dahlia was her favourite flower. But the Canna lily came close second. I remember names of plants mostly due to her & maybe only those that she spoke about or planted in her home.

Today I received this photo from my aunt - she had carried a Canna lily shrub with her from Goa for her home. And it is now flowering so beautifully.

Some days are tough but when you see something as simple as this - it makes your heart happy. Simple pleasures of life ! ❤️ Thank you Ammayee.

When the peacock decides to show off - anticipating the rain maybe ? He danced like this for over ten minutes.

The breakfast table today

Pre-monsoon weather. Sun hiding amongst the clouds. Kamini and Jasmine on the table.

I wish I could capture the smell. The Kamini tree at the entrance is flowering and the flowers are on the ground and on the tree. The driveway smells heavenly.

Some of the flowers were plucked for the table setting. And the dining area is smelling so delicious. Not only because of the hearty food but because of these glorious produce from the gardens.

It does make our hearts happy. Hope it does for our guests too.

Farm to table : Fernandin mangoes

A local variety of mango which is prized as a table fruit, it is naturally resistant to fruit flies and rain. We are lucky to have a tree .

If you remember, it is the tree at the far side of the- best remembered for the swings. For us it is also a tree where D and Deep played a lot and learnt how to climb trees.

As the fruit is getting ripe (maybe a week more before the pickings), we have an everyday chore of finding the fresh fruit fallen from the tree. These then are kept to naturally ripen and relished at home and served as part of the breakfast experience for our guests.

Farm to table : Karonda/Karvanda/Bengal currant Pickle

Our neighbours have this beautiful tree with this gorgeous fruit which reminds me of my childhood. Strangely no one in our household and neighbours seem to have heard about this fruit.

I offered to make a karonda pickle from the pickings. Which itself was great fun. D and her cousin Kez climbed a ladder to harvest this with Atticus playing a side role. ❤️❤️❤️

Today the pickle has been made. We had to make big decisions whether we do a sweet & spicy one or a savoury spicy sour one. We went with the latter ! 🌶️🍋

The joys of living in a village go beyond experimenting with these things. What I truly love about it is how neighbours are happy to share this produce (as they don’t know what to do) and also are equally excited to eat the outcome. So these will be bottled and sent with much love to their home.

These are some of the memories of a simpler childhood that I was fortunate to experience. And I do hope that D remembers some of this when she grows up.

The pickle will surely be a part of the breakfast experience.

Farm to table : Nutmeg

We have had this nutmeg plant for a 6yrs or so. It did fruit last year but maybe we weren’t around when it popped !

Yes - this fruit pops when it is ripe and ready. What a glorious inner cover in red - I just fell in love with it.

So now we have nutmeg that will make its way to the breakfast experience.

And the fruit will be made into a chutney - just discovered that Malayalees make this to be eaten as an accompaniment to rice.

Morning travails

The champa in the courtyard is blooming. And sheds flowers on the green grass.

The mission this morning was to arrange these flowers on a tennis racquet. 🎾🏸🌸

Surrounded by nature kids create their own version of play. And if they are taught to enjoy their own company - you don’t need no baby sitters or nannies. Nature does that job beautifully. ❤️
