Congratulations to Padma Shri, Pandiram Mandavi, a living legend of the Muria tribe in Bastar. We at Salban are thrilled to hear the news and so proud of his craft and achievements.

On a short visit to Gadbengal, his village in Narayanpur, we were fortunate to meet him and since then have been associated with his family’s multi-faceted talents, which they have been kind enough to share and exhibit at our home.

For an artist who has travelled across the world, he is shockingly humble and remains rooted in the traditions of his culture and surroundings. His intricate woodwork communes with nature and the spirits that reside in it bringing their essence out for everyone to see. It is remarkable how an ordinary piece of wood transforms into a stunning work of art with just a few strokes of his mallet.

Salute to a mother who has raised her cubs against much adversity. The Queen of Mukki Zone (DJ) basks in mamma love ❤️❤️

Salban has always had its share of interesting visitors. Writers, poets, artists, photographers, biologists, sociologists, animal and human doctors…..the list is long. And this time we were honoured to host, Dr Santwana Bordoloi, paediatrician, actor, and celebrated film director from Assam. Her two films, done decades apart, have won awards and travelled across the world.

Fame sits lightly on her sprightly frame. At 75+, when many are thinking of hanging up their boots, she walked kilometers through slush and mud, deep inside the forest. Keenly interested in nature, she looks at her surroundings with a spontaneous curiousity and an infectious sense of humour. She is not fond of spiders, she said. “But I observed you have a large spider in the room, which has only seven legs, wonder where the eighth one went?”

Folks, do look out for her films, Adajya (The Flight, 1996) and Maj Rati Keteki (The Midnight Hawk Cuckoo, 2017). Amazing works of art, using the rural Kamrup dialect of Assamese, that mainstream cinema shuns. She is an inspiration. More power to her.

Last week, Kanha lost a true legend - the Umarpani male. He was considered one of the biggest tigers in Central India. He lived for a good 14 years and was finally struggling with newer males to retain his space. He succumbed to his injuries in one such battle.
We were thinking back to the most incredible sighting of Umarpani in all his glory, fighting with a new contender over the beautiful DJ female.
Check out the blog we wrote in 2020 describing the hair-raising incident.

One afternoon in early January, the visitors at Mukki Zone were treated to the hair-raising sight of a mating battle between two male tig...
