mornings begin with a breakfast of steaming siddu, gluten-free sandwiches baked in our kitchen, and the river as your soundtrack. our chef’s daily ritual? a trip to banjar market for the valley’s freshest greens, like wild fiddlehead ferns and mountain herbs you won’t find anywhere else. our kitchen celebrates himachali classics like madra and chha gosht, each dish a story passed down through generations and reimagined for our table. as evening falls, guests gather for long, lively dinners. sharing slow-cooked dal, local trout, and our signature pickles.

our 4th footnote is about Nicholas Roerich, who found his way to these mountains long before we did.

//the context
a couple valleys over from Ausnya, the Roerich Art Gallery in Naggar sits quietly among the pines. in the 1920s, this Russian painter made the Himalayas his home and spent decades capturing the same blue ridgelines and shifting light we see every morning. his paintings-over 2,000 in his Himalayas series alone-have a way of making the mountains feel both familiar and otherworldly, almost as if you’re seeing them for the first time and remembering them all at once.

//the insight

what draws us to Roerich isn’t just his art, but the way he belonged here. he didn’t stand apart from the landscape-he built with local stone, learned village rhythms, and saw the mountains as living, breathing characters. his work moved from precise geography to something more inward and atmospheric, capturing the spirit of these peaks as much as their form. some mornings at Ausnya, when the clouds hang just right, we catch ourselves thinking, “that’s a Roerich sky.”

//the connection

it’s a bit of a drive, but we’ve partnered with a lovely local guide who brings the Roerich Gallery to life for our guests. this isn’t a tourist checkbox-it’s become one of our favourite day trips for anyone curious about the spirit of Himachal that drew us here in the first place. the same pull that made Roerich stay is what keeps us inspired at Ausnya-curious, rooted, and always looking up at the mountains.
