The Bodhgaya Hotel School

The Bodhgaya Hotel School TBHS is a project which offers unique vocational training in the hospitality sector to unemployed youth of Bihar, India.

The on-the-job learning approach, in combination with a proven theoretical curriculum, gives students a solid base to start a career. The Indian hospitality industry is among the most rapid growth industries in the Indian service sector. The demand for skilled and trained manpower is increasing in this industry. Meanwhile, there is a need for the young people in Bihar to receive more professional

training in order to integrate the labor market. Agragami India, a non-profit development organization working to improve the quality of life of the rural and urban underprivileged has decided to set up a hospitality training school in Bodhgaya to answer to those different needs in the area. The Bodhgaya Hotel School has been set up with the support of the Swiss association "EHLsmile" bringing the hospitality expertise of one of the world's leading hospitality School to ensure the students are receiving a high quality training. The particularity of the school is to be attached to a running hotel to develop skills following the method of "learning by doing" so that the students are productive on the job from the very first day of employment. The long-term vision of the project is triple:

- Enable younger generations to receive professional training and integrate the labor market
- Supply quality staff to the hotels, contribute to the professionalization and growth of the needs in hospitality services in Bodhgaya and Bihar to comply with the high standards required
- Offer the pilgrims and tourists the opportunity to participate actively to the sustainable economic development of the country.

Who said that combining tourism and social responsibility was impossible? This is the challenge we have decided to address at The Bodhgaya Hotel School. Learn more about our story by reading this short article!

Hospitality is among the fastest evolving industries in the Indian service sector. Hence, its demand for skilled and trained manpower increases continuously. In parallel, Bihar’s young adults need to receive professional training in order to enter the labor market and generate sufficient livelihood for themselves and their families. Agragami India, a non-profit organization whose goal is to improve the quality of life in rural and urban areas, has taken action to set up a hospitality training school in Bodhgaya. This school’s model was design to answer the needs of both, the Indian hospitaliy industry and Bihar’s underprivileged youth. To set up the Bodhgaya Hotel School, Agragami India has collaborated with two Swiss associations; IFPD and EHL Smile. The latter is an association founded by students from Ecole hôlière de Lausanne, one of the world's leading hotel management schools, to share the Swiss hospitality know-how with underpriviledged youth all around the world. The EHL Smile model which has been implemented in Bodhgaya is the unique combination of a school with a running hotel. The Bodhgaya Hotel School students are given high-quality training based on the principle of "learning by doing". The program is a combination of theoretical classes and practical work in the operations during which the students benefit from real guest exposure from their very first day. The project is built around 3 main pillars:


  • High-Quality Training - Provide our students with high-quality training based on real-life practice, which will give them a competitive edge compared to other candidates, thus ensuring them employment and livelihood.

  • Development of the Indian Hospitality Industry - Satisfy the growing need for qualified labor force in the Indian hospitality business and encourage entrepreneurship.
