Navaratri begins today and runs for nine nights, with Vijayadashami on Tuesday 20 October.

The first three nights are dedicated to Goddess Durga. In Tamil Nadu, families set up the Golu on the first day: a tiered display of dolls, a kalasam, and a lamp lit every evening. Karnataka has its own version in Gombe Habba.

Vegetarian and heading to Bangkok this week? The city’s Vegetarian Festival runs from 10 to 18 October.

Stalls and restaurants, above all around Yaowarat (Chinatown), serve jay food. You will know them by a yellow flag with red lettering. Per Thai reports, Yaowarat Road closes to traffic from 4 pm to 10 pm on opening night, Saturday 10 October, so plan your travel around it.

A note for vegetarians from India: jay is stricter than what most of us eat at home. It is fully vegan, with no dairy or eggs, and it leaves out garlic, onion, chives and leeks. Paneer, curd and garlic or onion based gravies are out, and the flavours are milder.

A fake "Google review job" is going around on Telegram, and it is using real hotel names, including UPAR Hotels. It works like this:

You're paid ₹40 to post a 5-star review on Google Maps.
"Welfare tasks" and a "VIP group" raise the payout to ₹80, then ₹160.
You're asked to deposit money to unlock "prepaid tasks". That deposit is never returned.

UPAR Hotels has no connection to these groups. We don't pay for reviews, we don't contact anyone on Telegram or WhatsApp about tasks, and we will never ask you for a deposit.

If you or someone you know has already paid, call the National Cyber Crime Helpline on 1930 or report it at https://cybercrime.gov.in. The sooner it's reported, the better the chance the bank can act. And please don't pay anything more to "recover" the money; that's usually the second half of the same scam.
